For over 23+ hours, the dedicated volunteers of the Warsaw Fire Department stood watch over a vehicle accident that occurred at 11:15am on 6-16-2026.

When a tanker carrying nitrobenzene, a highly toxic hazardous material, overturned at the NC 24 and I-40 interchange, our firefighters immediately responded, established a safety perimeter, coordinated with state and regional HazMat teams, protected the public, and remained on scene throughout a long and complex cleanup operation. Thankfully, due to the professionalism and quick actions of all involved, there was no threat to the public and no serious injuries were reported.

During those 23 hours, they worked alongside numerous local, regional, and state agencies to manage a hazardous materials incident that required patience, training, and unwavering commitment.

We are incredibly proud of every member who answered the call. Their dedication is a reminder that volunteer firefighters are among the most selfless people in our communities. Please join us in thanking the men and women of the Warsaw Fire Department and all assisting agencies for their professionalism, sacrifice, and commitment to keeping our community safe.

Warsaw Fire Department cleared the call at 10:19am on 6-17-2026. All roads are again open for traffic.

‼️Update: Traffic Alert‼️

Warsaw Fire Department remains on scene at the I-40/Hwy 24 interchange. The chemical spill has been cleaned up and removed from the roadway.

The overturned tractor-trailer sustained significant damage and remains an obstacle that must be removed before the area can fully reopen.

I-40 is currently open to traffic; however, Hwy 24 remains closed at this time. Crews are continuing cleanup and recovery operations, and we are hopeful the area will be cleared and reopened by lunchtime.

Please use caution in the area and seek alternate routes. We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation while emergency personnel work to safely clear the scene.

‼Traffic Alert‼

Traffic both eastbound and westbound at the I-40 Exit 364 / Highway 24 interchange is currently closed due to an overturned tractor-trailer and a hazardous material spill.

Motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes. Lane closures are expected to remain in place for an unknown amount of time while emergency crews work to contain the spill and clear the scene.

Please use caution in the area and follow directions from law enforcement and emergency personnel.
