Ways to think about a metaverse

Your boss wants a metaverse strategy, but what would that be, and what does metaverse even mean?

If we strip away the noise, what can we say about this, and what can we predict? If the narrow definition of ‘metaverse’ is that VR and AR will be the next smartphone, the broad definition is that there’s going to be a whole new internet. Our experience will be 3D, but much of that will be layered onto the real world as we see it through glasses.

So what do we say to the boss? Well, what was our mobile strategy in the 2000s? We didn’t know how big mobile would get and we didn’t know it would be totally transformed after 2007 and nothing we were working on would matter. But we were there, learning and experimenting, and thinking about what it might become, while knowing that might not be much. That was still the right strategy.

While concrete details on Disney’s plans for the metaverse are still scarce, it seems clear that plans of one kind or another are afoot. Through savvy marketing and commercial skills, and a thorough understanding of its own strengths and weaknesses, Disney has achieved the remarkable feat of remaining just as relevant with today’s Generation Z kids as it was with the baby boomer generation that first made it a household name. In recent years, headline-grabbing acquisitions like Marvel and Lucasfilm have given it custody of enduring favorite brands and characters that are ripe for adaption into new technology-driven storytelling experiences. Put together, these factors ensure that the House of Mouse is well-placed to play a leading role in the development of the metaverse.

This Is Life in the Metaverse

Every hour of the day and night with the gamers, parents, insomniacs, preteens and aspiring comedians who are the earliest adopters of the immersive, three-dimensional internet that Mark Zuckerberg has bet the future of his company on.

When I told my friends and family about my experiment, they all asked the same questions: What is the metaverse like? Is it fun?

Putting on the headset was annoying, but once I started chatting in Horizon, I had a good time and was reluctant to leave. I liked meeting people spontaneously without the increasingly heavy-handed algorithmic intervention of traditional social media platforms.

But explaining the metaverse through the lens of Horizon feels akin to unpacking the potential of “the web” by surfing AOL chat rooms in the 1990s, during the days of dial-up modems. Meta’s V.R. social network is an early and singular part of what could become a large technological shift.

Stephenson is now entering the marketplace with his own take on how his fictional concept might become a real-life make-believe world. He’s partnering with a crypto guy—Peter Vessenes, who heads the Bitcoin Foundation—to start Lamina1, a company hoping to create a scaffolding upon which creators can build an open metaverse.

Nissan goes virtual with the Sakura. Nissan Sakura Driving Island has so far been visited by 13,000 users. Many users are telling us just how surprised they are by the overall quality of the experience. So much so that one customer decided to purchase an actual Sakura after only test driving it virtually.

Prices peaked around the start of this year, but a crypto bear market and slower-than-expected metaverse adoption have ravaged prices, down 85% since January, and purchase volume, which has almost disappeared. By 2030, “a large proportion of people will be in the metaverse in some way,” predicts Melanie Subin, a director at The Future Today Institute in New York City. In the metaverse you'll be able to swim with the sharks, tour the Parthenon in Athens, or go skydiving -- all from your VR glasses. And "you" can be anyone you want, even LeBron James or a jaguar. The only limit in virtual reality is your imagination.
