Fly-In Messaging

WineAmerica is the national wine industry’s messenger for federal public policy priorities. Next week, 25 WineAmerica members from 10 states will attend about 80 meetings in just two days. They’ll brief top staff members of their Senators and Representatives, all emphasizing the same messages:
–Discontinue the sale of intoxicating h**p until appropriate regulation and taxation are implemented
–Pass the Farm Bill with its key funding sources for export promotion, block grants, research funding, and crop insurance
–Eliminate tariffs on wine and other products which ultimately are harming the American wine industry in several ways

Past successes from WineAmerica’s advocacy include:
–Craft Beverage Marketing and Tax Reform Act, which saves wineries of all sizes major money each year
–Repeal of the Special Occupational Tax (SOT, enacted to pay for the Civil War), saving even more money
–Repeal of the federal bond requirement bringing more savings
–Funding in prior Farm Bills for grape and wine industry priorities

Indiana Wine Country

The Hoosier state had grapes and wine in the 18th century, and was the 10th largest producer by the mid 19th century. The Indiana Small Winery Act of 1971 sparked major growth, so now the state has many small wineries and two of the largest in the United States.

The state’s location and corresponding climate allow for production of many different grape varieties along with fruits and honey used for wine. Part of the state is in the Ohio River Valley AVA (also in Ohio and Kentucky), and the Indiana Uplands AVA is totally within the state. The Indiana Winery and Vineyard Association was created in 1975 to lobby for the industry.

Farm Hills Winery & Orchard is located on the Justin Fruit Farm in Bristol Fruit Hills of northern Indiana. The farm has been in David Muir’s family since 1852, and he and his wife Michele opened the winery in 2010. They produce a wide range of cold-hardy Minnesota varietal wines like Brianna, LaCrescent and Marquette, and are especially proud of their Traminette, Indiana’s signature grape and wine.

Huber Orchard and Winery in Starlight, Indiana is a seventh generation, 700-acre farm of rolling hills and lakes that’s more like a conglomerate of fun and taste. In addition to the winery and distillery, there’s a Farm Market, Ice Cream Shop, and Family Farm Park. Ted and Dana Huber are the sixth generation, with their son Blake now the winemaker churning out a large selection of wines from various grapes and fruits. Dana is currently the Vice Chair of WineAmerica’s Board, and the Hubers have been active members for years.

Oliver Winery is among the 30 largest wineries in the U.S., and in Travel + Leisure’s Top 25 Wine Destinations. Established in 1972 by the Oliver family, the winery is now the only one in the country that is 100% employee-owned and follows its core values: Respect people…expect quality…think differently…get stuff done. Their wide selection of wines is categorized under “Wine Styles” and “Wine Collections” (like the Bakery Series with Key Lime, Peach, and Apple Pie options). Another attraction is the hot air balloon rides.

Congress is MIA—Again

Easter and Passover are past, Christmas and Hanukkah are still far away, and several legislative priorities still need to be addressed, but Congress is M.I.A.--- out of town for two weeks—again.

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security, the Farm Bill, and many other items remain in limbo, yet our legislators have skipped town again. Last year Congress was in session for just 79 days, and it looks like they’re aiming for a new record of absenteeism this year.

For WineAmerica it’s an inconvenience as well. We had scheduled dozens of appointments in Congressional offices for our annual “Fly-In” on May 5 & 6. With the Senators and Representatives now gone, it means meeting with staff, which actually is okay because they do the work anyway.

We are very grateful to our members who are traveling from around the country to be in DC so they can inform Congress of the wine industry’s priorities.

WineAmerica Annual “Fly-In”: May 5-6

Federal public policy advocacy

That’s what WineAmerica does on behalf of the American wine industry. Most of the time that means Michael Kaiser, our Washington presence, monitors and communicates with Congress, federal agencies, and beverage coalition partners. Michael is our Executive Vice President and Director of Government Affairs.

He also coordinates an annual “Fly-In”, which is shorthand for lots of people coming from around the country to meet with their Senators and Representatives, plus TTB and USDA, in their respective offices. In a typical year, Michael will schedule about 100 meetings over just 2 days.

They’re magic. Legislators love when their constituents travel all the way to DC to meet with them. And the same messages are being conveyed in 100 different offices, thanks to the pre-meeting briefings of our members and the “leave-behind” materials we prepare for them.

Georgia Wine Country

While the country of Georgia is the true birthplace of wine thousands of years ago, the state of Georgia was the sixth largest wine producer before Prohibition and has been growing in recent years. Most wineries are in northern Georgia near the Blue Ridge Mountains where the conditions for growing vinifera grapes are ideal. The industry emphasizes sustainability, and is supported by the University of Georgia’s Viticulture and Extension programs, along with the Georgia Wine Producers association.

Frogtown Cellars was created in 1998 by Craig and Cydney Kritzer, and is one of the most awarded wineries in the east, with over 200 medals from various competitions. In addition, winemaker Craig has twice been named one of the 100 most influential people in the U.S. wine industry. Their steep vineyards are at elevations from 1675 to 1825 feet on the Dahlonega Plateau AVA, and the tri-level gravity flow winery is both energy-friendly and quality-enhancing. They also have an Italian bistro for hungry visitors.

Habersham Vineyard & Winery, one of Georgia’s oldest (1983) and largest, offers consumers a wide range of vinifera, French hybrid and muscadine labels under the Habersham, Creekstone, and Southern Harvest labels. The three tasting rooms also feature specialty foods and other items from around the world.
