Dealing with Family During the Holidays

Navigating family dynamics during the holidays can be challenging but also rewarding. Here are some strategies to help make the experience smoother:

1. Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that not everything will be perfect. Families come with their quirks and imperfections. Embrace the moments of joy and try to let go of the desire for everything to be flawless.

2. Communicate Openly: If you have specific needs or concerns, communicate them clearly and respectfully. Open dialogue can help prevent misunderstandings and manage expectations.

3. Plan Ahead: Try to anticipate any potential issues or conflicts. Planning activities and schedules in advance can help reduce stress and avoid last-minute chaos.

4. Create Boundaries: It’s okay to set boundaries to protect your well-being. If certain topics or behaviors are particularly triggering, it’s okay to gently steer conversations or take breaks when needed.

5. Focus on Positives: Find and emphasize the positive aspects of the holiday experience. Celebrate the small wins and enjoy the moments of connection, even if they’re brief.

6. Take Time for Yourself: Make sure to carve out some personal time during the holiday season to recharge and de-stress. Whether it’s a quiet walk or a few minutes with a favorite book, self-care is important.

7. Seek Support: If the family dynamics are particularly challenging, consider talking to a therapist or counselor for additional strategies and support.

Ultimately, the goal is to enjoy the time with your family and create positive memories, even if things don’t go exactly as planned.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

With Autumn around the corner, the cooler weather, seasonal drinks, and fall-specific activities can bring excitement at the new season to come. But for others, changing seasons can result in feelings of sadness, depression, and hopelessness. This condition, known as Seasonal Affective Disorder, can make it hard to exist during the colder months. To combat Seasonal Affective Disorder, here are some tips and tricks to make this time of year easier on you:

1. Light Therapy: Consider using a light therapy box. These are designed to mimic natural sunlight and can help regulate your body’s internal clock. Aim for about 20-30 minutes each morning.

2. Get Outside: Try to spend time outside during daylight hours, even if it’s cloudy. Natural light, even in small amounts, can be beneficial.

3. Stay Active: Regular physical activity can boost your mood and energy levels. Even a daily walk or a short workout can make a difference.

4. Maintain a Routine: Keeping a regular schedule for sleeping, eating, and exercising can help stabilize your mood.

5. Stay Social: Engage with friends and family, even if it’s virtual. Social support is important for mental well-being.

6. Practice Mindfulness: Techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep-breathing exercises can help manage stress and improve mood.

7. Plan Enjoyable Activities: Make a list of activities you enjoy and try to incorporate them into your routine. This could be hobbies like crocheting or ceramics, reading, or watching a favorite show.

8. Vitamin D: Some people find that taking a vitamin D supplement helps, especially if you’re not getting much sunlight. However, it’s best to discuss this first with your primary care provider.

9. Create a Cozy Space: Make your home environment as pleasant as possible. Warm lighting, cozy blankets, and candles can help create a cozy atmosphere and help lift your spirits.

Remember, it’s important to be patient with yourself and to seek support when needed. Everyone experiences SAD differently, so it might take some time to find what works best for you.

Happy July 4th!

July 4th is independence day in the United States. Like many holidays, the Fourth is often a time of celebration with family members and friends. With that, it can be a stressful time of year filled with anxiety. If that sounds like you, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office. At Voltaire Behavioral Health and Wellness LLC, our founder, Marlaine Registe, helps people with a range of anxiety disorders from generalized anxiety to OCD-based anxieties as well as a host of other mental health conditions. We take most commercial health insurances and for those insurance policies we don’t accept, we charge a reasonable rate and prepare superbills for patients to take back to their insurance companies for reimbursement. To reach my office you can email our Office Manager, Aimee, at [email protected] or you can call us directly at (202)-952-9981. Our Office Assistant, Jenni, is friendly and will make this process go as smoothly as possible! We look forward to hearing from you!

As a Woman-of-Color Founded business, we at Voltaire Behavioral Health and Wellness LLC would like to extend a happy Juneteenth to our Black and/or African-American patients here in the States. Juneteenth is a celebration of the resilience and determination of Black people. We are happy to be founded and run by a Black woman and to be able to treat our Black community members who are dealing with mental health issues. 25% of Black people seek out mental health services. Health insurance makes accessing mental health services easier. But this issue is compounded by the fact that nearly 10% of Black people in this country do not have health insurance. There is also a stigma around getting help for mental health concerns in the Black community. We hope to fill that void and provide quality care to our patients. While trying something new can be scary, you don’t have to do this alone.
If any of this resonates with you, we would be happy to help you get started on a mental health journey.
Please call our office today at (202)-952-9981. Our Office Assistant, Jenni, will be happy to help you! You can also email us at [email protected] to get in touch with Aimee, our Office Manager. She is more than willing to help you get started on a journey to health and wellness.

Our founder, Marlaine Registe, is no stranger to discrimination and unfair treatment. Because of her experiences, Marlaine is committed to providing an inclusive and gender-affirming environment to all of her patients, and her LGBTQ+ patients are no exception. While this year has been a particularly difficult year for the Gay and Trans communities due to hateful bills being introduced and passed in states all across this great nation, we at Voltaire are even more steadfast and dedicated to making our behavioral health clinic a safe haven for all.

Happy Pride to everyone!
Stay safe this month. Look out for each other.

If you are struggling and would like an inclusive mental health clinician experience, please consider calling us at Voltaire Behavioral Health and Wellness. Our number is (202)-952-9981 and our Office Assistant, Jenni, or our Office Manager, Aimee will be happy to assist you.

In life, as we experience trauma and witness trials and tribulations, it can be easy to hold onto inaccurate beliefs about yourself but it is important to remember that those beliefs are not facts. The fact is you are loved, you are cared for, and you matter. Here are five things to let go of as we enter the summer months.

Labor Day is a day of momentous celebration of hard-working Americans. While hustle culture permeates our daily lives and the lines between work and our personal lives are blurred, it is difficult for people to carve out time to focus on themselves. This labor day, we at Voltaire Behavioral Health and Wellness hope that you find time to focus on yourself.

Consider doing one or more of the following:

Take 5 minutes to do a guided meditation to center yourself.
If you take medication and/or vitamins, take them and stay hydrated.
Journal or talk to your loved ones about your feelings.

Lastly, if you are struggling with your mental health you are not alone.

If you are in the DMV and have commercial health insurance, we may be able to help you. Call us at (202)-952-9981 for inquiries. We look forward to hearing from you!

Happy Labor Day!

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month!

Each year, millions of Americans are diagnosed with mental health conditions. While strides have been made to normalize mental illness and remove stigma and shame, there is still much more to be done. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As a mental health clinic, we are doing our part– we provide mental health services to marginalized communities and try our best to be affordable and inclusive. Our patients come from many different walks of life, they are intergenerational. We see children with behavioral issues to senior citizens dealing with life transitions and aging.

To our patients, take care of yourselves. We are proponents of self-care and believe that self-care, coupled with medication and therapy, can make the difference between life and death.
Please go to your therapy sessions, take your prescribed medications, and take care of your bodies.

To potential patients, welcome! We are a mental health clinic that focuses on medication management, ADHD, Eating Disorders, and Life Transitions. While those are our focuses, we treat all kinds of psychiatric conditions. If you are in need of help please email us at [email protected] or call us at 202-952-9981!
To learn more about our practice visit voltairebhw.com!

If you are in need of emergency physiatric help, please go to your nearest emergency room or 24-hour psychiatric clinic. If you would like to speak to someone consider calling or reaching out to the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or the Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386.

To all of our patients, both old and new, Happy Pride Month!

Pride Month takes place every June and acknowledges the vast diversity amongst LGBTQ+ people. The first pride took place in 1970 and began by LGBTQ+ people advocating for fair treatment when it comes to healthcare and housing. Fifty years on, LGBTQ+ people still face discrimination in health care, housing, and all other facets of life. When it comes to mental health care, it is important for LGBTQ+ individuals to have access to providers who understand
them. At Voltaire Behavioral Health and Wellness, Marlaine Registe has experience working with patients who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. She has experience working with trans, gender non-conforming, le****ns as well as gay and bisexual folks. If your identity falls outside of those mentioned, please feel free to reach out. We would love to help you. If you are in need of mental health services and live in DC or Maryland, please call us at 202-952-9981! Aimee or Angelito will help schedule you for an appointment. Be well and we look forward to working with you!

All the best & Stay Safe!
