An estimated $100 million in scholarships go unused annually due to lack of applicants.

Every year, students talk themselves out of opportunities before anyone else has the chance.

They decide they’re not qualified enough.

They assume someone else’s story is more deserving.

They convince themselves they won’t be selected.

The truth? You don’t know what can happen if you never apply.

And here’s something important: at Aid Through Art, we believe every applicant brings value to our community. Scholarship recipients are selected for awards, but applicants also become part of our Rooted & Rising network, a community built on connection, mentorship, encouragement, and growth.

If you’ve experienced homelessness, foster care, incarceration, financial hardship, housing insecurity, or another major life challenge, apply for the Mychael’s Gift Scholarship before October 31. [email protected]

Could you or someone you know benefit from a $25,000 scholarship to pursue a BA in fine, performing or liberal arts— or advanced degree in public interest law!?!

Aid Through Art has just that!

Courtney Lea is an educator, executive leader, creative strategist, and community builder whose life's work has always centered on developing people, cultivating potential, and creating pathways to opportunity. Over the course of more than two decades, she served as a classroom teacher, school principal, district superintendent, executive coach, and national nonprofit executive, developing leaders, strengthening organizations, and helping communities navigate change, build capacity, and create lasting impact.Throughout her career, she developed expertise in leadership development, strategic planning, partnership cultivation, project management, coaching, program design, stakeholder engagement, fundraising, public speaking, and organizational growth: skills that now support her work in organizational leadership, creative consulting, artist development, and talent management.

The defining chapter of Courtney's journey, however, began not with a professional ascension but with a personal loss. Following the death of her daughter, Mychael, an aspiring public defender and relentless advocate for justice, Courtney's understanding of purpose was profoundly reshaped. The vision that had guided her professional life remained intact, but the mission became deeply personal. Rather than continuing along a traditional executive path, she redirected a lifetime of leadership experience toward preserving and advancing her daughter's legacy through service, opportunity, creative healing, and community impact.

Today, Courtney serves as a mentor, advocate, strategist, and manager for the creative careers of her children. She supports Nailah Faye, a multidisciplinary artist, performer, and creative entrepreneur whose work centers creativity, self-expression, and personal storytelling. She also guides Benevolent Sol, a musician, producer, and creative artist whose work explores identity, humanity, healing, and self-expression through music and storytelling.

Courtney leads the growth and development of Aid Through Art, an organization founded by Mychael and inspired by her commitment to supporting people impacted by housing instability, foster care involvement, and other systemic barriers. Through arts-centered programming, wellness initiatives, community engagement, and the Mychael's Gift Scholarship Program, Courtney continues the work Mychael envisioned.

Whether building organizations, supporting artists, creating opportunities for young people, or carrying forward Mychael's legacy, she remains committed to storytelling, artistic expression, human connection, and community-centered transformation.

In this chapter of her life, success is measured not only by the organizations she leads, but by the time spent supporting her children, the lives she empowers, the stories she helps bring into the world, and the legacy of opportunity, creativity, and service she is building for generations to come.

The Creative Legacy Project is a hub for family creativity, youth development, arts education, and community engagement. Led by Courtney Lea, the platform highlights the creative work of Benevolent Sol and Nailah Faye and supports Aid Through Art's mission of fostering connection, healing, and oppor

Aid Through Art is seeking passionate, community-centered leaders to join our Board of Directors as we continue creating spaces for connection, creativity, and opportunity for individuals impacted by housing instability, foster care involvement, and the justice system.

Grounded in the belief that everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and supported, we use art to cultivate kinship, self-expression, and possibility. As we enter our next chapter, we are seeking board members who share our commitment to strengthening communities, expanding access to opportunity, and fostering a sense of rootedness for individuals who may lack the relationships, resources, and support networks that help people thrive.

We are particularly interested in individuals with experience in:

Fundraising & Development
Finance, Accounting & Legal Affairs
Marketing, Communications & Public Relations
Human Resources & Organizational Development
Mental Health, Child Development & Education
Housing, Foster Care & Social Services
Criminal Justice, Reentry & Prison Advocacy
Community Engagement & Strategic Partnerships

We also recognize that some of the most impactful leadership comes from lived experience. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who have navigated foster care, housing instability, homelessness, incarceration, reentry, or other challenges connected to the communities we serve. Your voice, experiences, and insights are valuable forms of expertise.

We are especially interested in hearing from young adults ages 18–25 who are passionate about community building, advancing equity, and developing their leadership through board service.

Aid Through Art is committed to building a board that reflects the diversity, strengths, and lived experiences of our community. We welcome applicants from historically marginalized and underrepresented groups and believe that inclusive leadership creates stronger outcomes and deeper impact.

Many leaders I coach struggle with motivating their teams beyond what feels like the bare minimum. When expectations aren’t met—even when clearly communicated—it can seem like team members are intentionally resistant or even insubordinate.

But often, the issue isn’t resistance or defiance—it’s that something is missing to help them move from instruction to implementation.

If you’re facing this challenge, take a step back and ask yourself:

✅ Have I clearly communicated the vision of the work?
✅ Does my team member have the skills to complete the task?
✅ Have I made the purpose of the work clear so they can connect with it?
✅ Have I provided all the necessary resources?
✅ Can they see how their work supports the larger strategic plan?

In “Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard”, Chip and Dan Heath highlight three key components for driving effective movement:

🔹 Direct the Rider – Provide clear, logical direction by identifying successful patterns, scripting key behaviors, and setting a defined goal.
🔹 Motivate the Elephant – Engage emotions by connecting to feelings, making change manageable, and fostering growth.
🔹 Shape the Path – Modify the environment to make success easier by adjusting surroundings, building habits, and leveraging social influence.

New initiatives bring change, and lasting change requires ongoing reinforcement. My clients achieve momentum with their teams because, with my support, they develop strong strategic planning and implementation systems.

📢 🤩 I am honored to have been selected to present at this year’s National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) conference. NAEYC is committed to creating equitable learning opportunities for young children, recognizing the strengths, cultural backgrounds, languages, and experiences that make each child unique.

In my session, I’ll be diving into practical approaches for creating safe and inclusive environments where all children—especially the most marginalized—can truly belong. I look forward to sharing insights and tools to support educators in making a lasting impact.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see the beloved LeVar Burton open the conference as the 2024 Annual Conference Opening Session Speaker. You can register here. 👉 https://www.naeyc.org/events/annual/registration
