Today we lost Eduardo Roca Salazar “Choco.”

A defining figure in Cuban art, whose work shaped generations of artists that followed. Across paintings, sculptures and mixed media, he maintained a rigorous and unmistakable visual language, most notably through his role in reviving and elevating collagraph printmaking.

He was deeply committed to his work, highly intelligent and a kind and generous person. I considered him a friend.

I’m grateful for moments like this, and for the time I spent with him in Cuba. It was an honor to work with him and to present his works in the United States.

His legacy is lasting.

My thoughts are with his family, his loved ones and his team.

Rest in peace, Choco. 💔
