A Cuban Migration Story

Migration first begins as a state of mind. Long before departure, a person can already have left; in thought, in intention, in the way the future is imagined. Many of the artists in this exhibition still live in Cuba, yet their thinking is set on elsewhere, held in a constant state of fight or flight by the hardship and uncertainty of daily life. For them, the process has already begun. What they seek is not necessarily to leave a country they love, but to transform the circumstances in which they live.

Migration first begins as a state of mind. Long before departure, a person can already have left; in thought, in intention, in the way the future is imagined. Many of the artists in this exhibition still live in Cuba, yet their thinking is set on elsewhere, held in a constant state of fight or flight by the hardship and uncertainty of daily life. NCO Gallery is a contemporary art space presenting international works with a focus on Cuban artists. It is an active cultural and community space, with exhibitions alongside live music, screenings and intimate gatherings.

The gallery is founded and directed by Natalie O'Connor, a Gallerist and Curator whose work centers on cross-cultural exchange and the introduction of artists from developing regions to U.S. audiences.

Before The Square, NCO Gallery existed in Old Town, Alexandria and Blagden Alley, D.C.

NCO Creative is a boutique art advisory firm dedicated to procuring international contemporary works, with a special focus on Cuban art. The company partners with businesses to curate collections and create thoughtful art experiences.

Its Founder, Natalie O'Connor, is an Art Advisor of Cuban-Irish descent, with nearly two decades of experience in the contemporary art field. O'Connor, who previously worked with the World Bank Art Program, has organized exhibitions across Cuba, Lebanon, Florida, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Services include
• Curated exhibitions and events, locally and off-site
• Private viewings for individuals and groups
• Art advisory services for businesses, collectors and institutions
• Partnerships and special projects with businesses, nonprofits and other organizations, including benefit art auctions and art therapy sessions

We are pleased to announce that NCO Gallery is now located at The International Square, 1850 K Street NW, Washington, D.C. Situated on K Street in the financial district, the gallery occupies a central location in downtown D.C.!

NCO Gallery is a contemporary art space presenting international works, with a focus on Cuban artists. It is an active cultural and community space, with exhibitions alongside receptions, live music, documentary screenings, intimate gatherings and wellness programs.

The gallery is founded and directed by Natalie O’Connor, a Gallerist and Curator whose work centers on cross-cultural exchange and the introduction of artists from developing regions to U.S. audiences. Before The Square, she opened two galleries in Old Town, Alexandria, and one in Blagden Alley, Washington, D.C. NCO Gallery takes form in each location she is in, bringing her artists to different communities and new audiences.

Through her company, NCO Creative, O’Connor also offers art consulting services, creative event coordination and various types of partnerships. She has organized exhibitions across Cuba, Florida, Lebanon, Virginia and Washington, D.C., and spent five years at the World Bank Art Program, contributing to large-scale multidimensional exhibitions. Of Cuban-Irish descent, her perspective is informed by a longstanding engagement with international contemporary art.

The gallery will open to the public on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, and will present a rotating selection of works by its artists throughout the year, in addition to its exhibition schedule, screenings and immersive events!

In this piece the hares, representing migrants, are arranged in the shape of the American flag. They represent the journeys of those who leave home in search of freedom and a new beginning.

Part of Rassi’s “Liebre” series, the hare becomes a universal symbol of migration; carrying stories of perseverance, hope, and the pursuit of a better life.
