We work each day for a better Boston. Today, we're proud to release our new report: Public Transportation as a Public Good: Policy options for improving mobility and equity in Boston.

The COVID-19 pandemic has put a spotlight on the city’s challenges, including inequity in transportation, income, and affordable housing. The recovery presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to rethink public services and reimagine the role that city government plays in creating a fairer and more just Boston.

Our analysis summarizes the limitations of existing public transportation infrastructure and the MBTA's service delivery model, assesses a range of alternative policy options, and presents recommendations for a set of changes that would improve equitable access to transit.

We hope that Mayor Kim Janey and all of the 2021 mayoral candidates will embrace our recommendations as part of their transportation platforms and policies as they work to shape the future of Boston.

An reminder: personal responsibility is important and you should be proud of everything you do to reduce waste and lower your own emissions. But! We have to hold governments and corporations accountable and push them to take action. You can really make every day Earth Day by voting, contacting your elected officials, letting your favorite brands know they need to do more than greenwashing, supporting environmental justice work, and advocating for the rights of indigenous communities. Every action you take gets us a step closer to a cleaner, safer, more stable, and more just world.

We’re looking forward to the inauguration and the opportunity it brings to advance policies that will benefit all Americans. The new administration won’t solve all (or even many) of the challenges we face, but we’ll have partners in the White House and in Congress who care about people and who genuinely want to solve problems. That’s a big deal. We must work with them and continue pushing them to enact progressive policies as quickly as possible. There is no time to waste. Let’s enjoy the day and then get back to work.
