Today at SPARC ~ Reston, adapted bowling made its debut, and it turned into a moment worth remembering. Our team built a ramp using pool noodles, chairs, and tape, so every participant could send a ball rolling toward the pins on their own terms. One participant, who uses a wheelchair and often talks about wanting more independence, lit up when her roll knocked down a strike. She threw her fist in the air, grinning ear to ear, fully proud of what she’d just done herself. The independence kept building through the day: with our art therapist, she used a Play-Doh piano she could play just by touching it with her face or elbow, working an adapted video game the same way. By the end of the day she was glowing, having spent hours doing things independently that had been out of reach for a long time. It was the kind of day that reminds you why this work matters.
