☀️ What happens if you qualify for $0 solar—but your home needs extra work first?

Sometimes a site survey finds that a roof, electrical panel, or another part of the home needs attention before solar can move forward.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the project stops.

In some cases, instead of paying thousands of dollars out of pocket for that work, the project can be structured with a very low solar rate—such as 6¢ or 8¢ per kWh—to help cover the improvements.

And that can still be a very strong deal.

Here’s a simple example using 750 kWh of solar energy per month:
☀️ $0.00/kWh PPA: $0
☀️ 6¢/kWh PPA: $45/month
☀️ 8¢/kWh PPA: $60/month
⚡ Electricity at roughly 23¢/kWh: about $173/month

So even if your project changes from 0¢ solar to 6¢ or 8¢ solar, you could still be paying substantially less for the electricity your panels produce.

And there can be another major benefit:

🏠 Necessary roof or electrical work may be included in the project rather than becoming a large upfront expense.

For example, if your solar system produces 9,000 kWh per year:
☀️ At 6¢: about $540/year
☀️ At 8¢: about $720/year
⚡ At 23¢: about $2,070/year

That’s why we don’t look at solar as simply “free or not free.”

We look at the whole picture:
- What work does your home need?
- What will your energy cost?
- What option gives you the best long-term value?

Sometimes the answer is a 0¢ PPA.

Sometimes paying 6¢ or 8¢ for solar electricity can make it possible to complete necessary home improvements while still paying far less for energy than you otherwise would.

Our job is to show you the options and the numbers clearly—without pressure—so you can decide what makes sense for your home. 🌱☀️

☀️ Another Maryland home is officially running on solar!

That’s where net metering comes in.

During sunny hours, your solar panels may produce more electricity than your home is using. Instead of letting that extra energy go to waste, it flows back to the electric grid.

Your utility tracks two things:

⚡ Electricity you pull from the grid when your home needs more power than your panels are producing.

☀️ Electricity you send back to the grid when your solar system produces more than you’re using.

The energy you send back can earn you credits that help offset the electricity you use from the grid later — for example, at night or on cloudy days.

A simple example:

Your solar system produces 800 kWh this month.
Your home uses 900 kWh.
If 300 kWh of your solar production was exported to the grid, those exports may be credited toward the electricity you pulled from the grid.

The exact value of those credits depends on your utility and local net-metering rules.

💡 The important takeaway: Going solar doesn’t usually mean disconnecting from the grid. Your home and the grid work together — your panels produce electricity when the sun is shining, and net metering helps account for the energy moving in both directions.

During the first half of 2026:

🌎 Solar generated 1,564 TWh of electricity worldwide — supplying more than 10% of global electricity for the first time.

🇺🇸 Here in the United States, solar generated about 227 TWh, accounting for roughly 10.2% of all U.S. electricity generation.

That means about 1 out of every 10 kilowatt-hours generated in the U.S. came from the sun.

And the momentum is growing fast.

Compared with the first half of 2025, U.S. solar generation increased by nearly 20%.

Even more remarkable: global solar electricity generation has more than doubled in just three years, growing from approximately 769 TWh in the first half of 2023 to 1,564 TWh in 2026.

These are huge numbers — but behind them are millions of individual rooftops, businesses, schools, churches, solar farms, and homeowners producing electricity every single day.

We put our money where our mouth is. Literally. 🌞

Earlier this year, we had the solar panels on our own founder Marcus Hoy's D.C. rooftop cleaned by our partners at EcoSun Wash. Flat roof. Urban environment. Panels that had been accumulating city grime for a while.

We've been tracking the production data for 4 months since. And the results came back better than we originally hoped.

We're not sharing the final numbers quite yet — we're putting the finishing touches on the full case study this week. But what we can tell you is this:

☀️ A new solar chapter for Mary’s DC home!

Mary’s flat-roof home, located in a historic district, qualified for the free solar program available to eligible DC homeowners and businesses.

Her new 6.16 kW solar system is expected to offset approximately 93% of her annual electricity usage—dramatically reducing the portion of her Pepco bill tied to energy consumption and helping protect her household from future electricity rate increases. Standard Pepco connection and service charges will still apply, but the long-term savings could be significant.

The impact goes beyond Mary’s household budget. By generating clean, renewable energy from her own rooftop, Mary will also reduce her home’s carbon footprint for years to come. 🌱

Here are practical ways locals and visitors can take part:
🚇 Skip the rental car. Arrive through Union Station and use Metro to explore the city.

🚲 See DC by bike. Capital Bikeshare offers more than 6,000 bikes at over 700 stations, making it easy to travel between monuments and neighborhoods without driving.

🏨 Choose a sustainable hotel. Look for properties with third-party certifications and programs that reduce water use and food waste, source locally and support community organizations.

☀️ Heatwave + Solar Panels: What Homeowners Should Know

Good news: your solar panels are built to handle hot, sunny weather. You usually do not need to do anything special to “protect” them during a heatwave.
That said, extreme heat can slightly reduce solar panel efficiency. Solar panels need sunlight to produce energy, but very high temperatures can make them operate a bit less efficiently. So if you notice a small dip in production during extreme heat, that can be completely normal.

A few smart tips for solar homeowners:
✅ Check your monitoring app to make sure your system is producing normally
✅ Keep your inverter and battery area well-ventilated
✅ Avoid spraying cold water on hot panels during the middle of the day
✅ Do not cover your panels — they are designed for direct sunlight
✅ Use major appliances during sunny hours to get the most value from your solar energy

And most importantly, do not climb on the roof during extreme heat. If something looks off, contact your solar provider.
