Too many people rely on editing to make their brand's podcast great. Hosts and producers who want everything to be perfect often end up over-editing, which can make people sound artificial instead of authentic.

To help you be a better editor, here are three important things to remember.

Edit what you hear (not what you read). Listen to the audio all the way through, making notes when you hear things that may need to be edited. Then go back to the places you made notes and listen again to decide what edits to make). Don’t edit from transcripts!

Avoid editing single words and minor speech errors. Remember, we all stutter, say "umm" and "ahh", and trip over words when we speak. Too much editing makes the hosts and guests sound unnatural and the audio less professional.

Edit for the audience's benefit. Cut content that doesn't provide value to your audience. Only include what your listeners will appreciate. Make edits that clarify the points your audience should understand and, when necessary, re-order the conversation to present a clearer storyline.

Let your host and your guests be human. Include short moments where their personality shines or they display their human side. Your audience will appreciate it.

We hope these tips help YOU become a better podcast editor!

An interview podcast might not be the right choice for your audience. We’ve heard it many times. “We’re going to start a podcast. Our CEO is going to have really important conversations with key leaders in our industry. It’s going to be great!” Of course it is. Public affairs podcasts are ...
