In 2023 we are stuck in a climate paradox: Momentum to address the climate crisis is accelerating while top line indicators linked to global GHG emissions, environmental degradation, and social inequality continue to worsen.

For 3 years, I have surveyed green economy practitioners about ways we might resolve this climate paradox, and some of their innovative ideas are described in the essay below. Such appreciation to The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center for giving me the focus & time to develop this work.

We need to finally get real about resolving the climate paradox and the contradictory policy and investment decisions fueling it

Honored to have been selected for a residency this March from The Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center! My work there will build on a global surveying project initiated in 2020 & designed to explore how to unlock a 2020s Green Breakthrough.

As part of this, I need your input on how we might think differently about approaches to addressing the climate crisis including the COP process, grassroots activism, ESG investing, policy making, data measurement, and more.

Join me for a virtual panel to explore ways satellite-based data are transforming sustainability measurement and efforts to address the climate crisis.

Research by the Laboratoire Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement found significant gaps between the "world of reporting and the real world of emissions." These estimates suggest that global emissions each year are being underreported by an amount between the annual emissions of the United States and China (that's a lot).

A majority of this gap is due to how countries account for emissions from land, something that satellite-based data (and tighter reporting standards) could help rectify. Satellites also can monitor emissions in real-time linked to industrial sectors, often enhanced by .

As COP27 approaches this November in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, attention will again turn to national climate action and the tug of war between target-setting, activist scrutiny, and everything in between.

The new 2022 Global Green Economy Index™ (GGEI) has a lot to contribute, as its measurement methodology assesses the distance of each of the 160 countries from global sustainability targets (the graphic below gives an example of what this looks like for India and air quality).

Visiting post-Brexit, COP26 Britain last week begged the question: what is going on in the UK's green economy lately? Phil McNally of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change sums it up as follows:

"Much of the (UK) progress to date in reducing emissions has come from low-hanging fruit...the next stage of decarbonization will be more complex. This requires moving beyond the low-hanging fruit and addressing issues that will have a direct impact on the lives and livelihoods of people across the country."

Where is momentum in the green economy today?

The new 2022 Global Green Economy Index™ (GGEI) offers real-time insight into which of the 160 markets it covers are accelerating progress & why.

Some of the results are unexpected. For example, while ranking 108th overall on the GGEI, Jordan is #1 in terms of green economy progress from 2005-2020. And the US & China diverge significantly when only progress is considered, with China ranking 9th and the US 57th.

In 2020, we began to explore how the Global Green Economy Index (GGEI) could be transformed to track both country progress & distance from global sustainability targets. 20,000+ data points later, here is the new GGEI!

It evaluates 160 countries and how they perform over the past two decades on climate change & social equity, sector decarbonization, markets & ESG investment, and environmental health.

Access data results (where Sweden is again the top performer) & much more:

The Global Green Economy Index™ (GGEI) measures the green economy performance of 160 countries across 18 indicators. Our measurement approach accounts for two considerations: the progress on each indicator from 2005 to the present and the distance between each country’s current performance and t...
