Cracking the Nut Conference

Cracking the Nut Conference Started in 2011, the Cracking the Nut® conferences are participatory learning events designed to crack the “tough nuts” in international development.

Since the beginning of Cracking the Nut®, Connexus has organized 13 conferences throughout the world. We are thrilled to announce that the next Cracking the Nut conference will take place online over four half-days from November 15-18, 2021! This learning event will highlight how systems can be designed, adapted, and reinforced to ensure regular access to food, water and energy for rural populatio

ns in developing countries. The conference will highlight how public and private sector initiatives can work at the nexus of food, water and energy to stimulate rural and agricultural development. This topic is particularly important given the negative impacts of the COVID pandemic and climate change in countries with growing populations and food insecurity. By focusing on how to make systems more resilient, this event will convene leading experts in rural development, sustainable agriculture, water resource management, clean energy, finance and investment, including representatives from the private sector, governments, donors and development implementers. Cracking the Nut 2021 will provide a demand‐driven, collaborative learning space where participants share experiences and best practices on innovative approaches to expand food production, manage water resources, and generate clean energy in ways that increase rural incomes and improve equitable access to sustainable sources of food, water and energy. This will include methodologies, strategies, and tools; networks for partnership and coordinated collaboration; and insights into the opportunities and threats impacting food, water, and energy systems today. This multi‐day event will bring together approximately 300 of the world’s relevant stakeholders to discuss “tough nuts” related to building resilient systems, including the themes below. We are excited to announce the release of the Cracking the Nut 2024 conference publication!

Cracking the Nut 2024: Preparing for Accelerated Climate Change took place on October 7-8, 2024 in Abuja, Nigeria. The publication features key lessons derived from participants' shared experiences and best practices on innovative approaches across three themes:

1. Mitigating GHG emissions associated with agriculture and food production

2. Supporting climate adaptations in agriculture

3. Integrating security and resilience in food systems
