RELEASE: Former Civilian Head of Special Operations Joins Navigators Defense Practice
Navigators Global President Phil Anderson announced today the addition of Senior Strategist Colonel Mark E. Mitchell (Ret.), former Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations/Low-Intensity Conflict (SO/LIC), to the Navigators Global Defense, Intelligence, Security and Space Practice.
As the former Acting ASD (SO/LIC), Mitchell served as senior civilian advisor to the Secretary of Defense on all special operations/low-intensity conflict issues and oversaw the establishment and monitoring of global policies and operations for special operations, counterterrorism, irregular warfare, stabilization and humanitarian affairs, peacekeeping operations, global health engagement, counternarcotics, and counter threat finance, among other areas.
“Colonel Mitchell is a highly decorated U.S. Army combat veteran and we’re honored to welcome him to our Defense, Intelligence, Security and Space Practice,” said Anderson. “His nearly 30 years of national-level defense and counterterrorism policy experience is a major addition to our policy team.”
Mitchell was among the first U.S. soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan following the events of 9/11 and advised the Northern Alliance prior to the fall of the Taliban regime. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions in the November 2001 Battle of Qala-I Jangi in Mazar-e Sharif.
The Navigators Global Defense, Intelligence, Security and Space Practice has unparalleled, nonpartisan insight into key defense and national security policy and thought leaders throughout the federal government and foreign capitals. The practice is managed by Navigators Principals Andy Keiser and Lt. Col. Doug Distaso (Ret.), and features Senior Strategists Lt. Gen. Thomas Trask (Ret.), former Vice Commander of USSOCOM, and LTG John Mulholland (Ret.), the former Deputy Commander of USSOCOM and CIA Associate Director of Military Affairs, in addition to Mitchell.

“Our team’s combined acumen provides our clients with best-in-class expertise on specialties ranging from special operations, to global security risk management, to cyber, AI, and defense technologies, and everything in between,” said Anderson. “We prepare clients to meet their unique needs on international issues, transformative technology developments, and U.S. security challenges.
