Celebrating : In a recent interview, Housing and Urban Development CFO Vinay Singh marked a milestone as his agency announced its first ever clean audit opinion without any material weaknesses.

HUD's clean audit, particularly in grants management, a key area of federal oversight, is a major accomplishment for the agency.

Singh credits rigorous processes, teamwork, and improved IT systems for this achievement. He also stresses the CFO's role in ensuring financial stewardship and fostering collaboration across the agency to maintain transparency and manage risks effectively. Singh's passion for his role is evident, as he views numbers as a means to tell a story and convey the importance of financial integrity in public service.

Since the inaugural federal government shutdown in 1981, shutdowns have become an increasingly common tool in American politics, fueled by polarization and slender majorities. The latest looming deadline, March 1 and March 8, underscore the impact on government workers and institutions. With federal funding tied to legislative priorities, threats and actual shutdowns disrupt the lives of essential and non-essential employees alike.

Most striking is the fact that the majority of federal workers, around 2.87 million or 2% of the total American workforce, hold non-political positions. Additionally, 4 million federal contractors depend on the government for their livelihoods. During a shutdown, these workers face financial hardships, amplified by the uncertainty surrounding retroactive pay.

The toll on federal workers goes beyond financial strain. Shutdowns disrupt services, investigations, and FOIA requests, creating stress, wasted time, and mental health challenges. In the face of recurring threats, proactive preparation, including financial planning and mental health support, becomes crucial to mitigate the impact on government workers. Recognizing their resilience and fostering a culture of preparedness can empower them to navigate these uncertain times effectively. "

Thanks to political polarization and thin majorities for the party in power, federal government shutdowns are on the rise.

Last night, nearly all 250 of our OPEXers were on hand for our 2024 Company Kickoff, an afternoon of fun, awards, celebrating our 2023 accomplishments, and aligning on our 2024 strategic priorities.

Here’s a glimpse into what we’re aiming to achieve this year:
1. Deliver exceptional technology experiences
2. Set the standard for "Govification" (i.e. creating 100% built-for-government solutions)
3. Incorporate additional AI Tools and add more APIs and integrations
4. Make software upgrades faster for our customers.

We are hitting the ground running, reorganizing our engineering resources for major gains, and teed up for 2024 to be our best year ever - as we continue on our journey of empowering government changemakers with they tools they need. .

For our final day of 2024 , our go-to-market team partnered with the Northern Virginia Science Center to donate and pack STEM activity kits for kids.

At OPEXUS, we know STEM skills are needed by everyone in today's (and tomorrow's) workplace. From software engineering to budgeting and from human resources to product development, science, technology, engineering, and math are essential for success.

We are proud to support STEM education efforts and had a great time doing it!
