Introducing the Manualists!
[Image description: A smiling white woman with short brown curly hair and brown eyes. A white man with brown hair and a goatee bearing a slight grin.]
We started this business because we are passionate about centering deaf voices in conversations about deaf lives, sign language interpreting, and access. Our love for language led us to the field of sign language interpretation and translation. Naomi’s path was direct, with 20+ years of experience in the field. Octavian bridged his love of working with languages and his training as a historian to develop a meta-view of sign language interpreting as a field- interpreter education, praxis, and research through the lens of disability justice. Through this lens of disability justice, we wanted to share our perspective of interpreting as deaf consumers, educators, interpreters, and academics in the goal of creating a more equitable and accessible world for all.
