A Positive Story of Malawi
Yesterday, I had the special experience of being introduced to Peter Mawanga, a globally acclaimed artist renowned for his pioneering music style, Afro-Vibes—a rich fusion of traditional “Nyanja” instruments like the Nsansi (thumb piano), Valimba (xylophone), Visekese (shakers), and Kaligo (one-stringed guitar) with contemporary sounds.
I was introduced by Ambassador Jeanine Jackson, who was US Ambassador to Malawi from 2011 to 2014 and now with Advancing Girls Education in Africa and the FCA Corps Africa Fund Board of Directors.
Ambassador Jackson is also an Advisor to Associates for sustainable destination development projects in and beyond. We are especially focused on the conservation and preservation of natural and cultural heritage and how both can be leveraged for increased sustainable development in Africa. Peter Mawanga’s music is one such lever, an intangible heritage attraction for the country and, we believe, a means for attracting more people, business, and investment to Malawi – an important “soft diplomacy” tool! He has toured and performed throughout the USA and collaborated with several American performers. Click below to see his YouTube channel.
