Almost every year I go to Geneva to attend meetings of the Real Estate Market Advisory Committee (REM) of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). I've been a member of that committee for 10 years or so. Last month, in addition to the REM session, I made a presentation to the larger Ministerial Meeting of the Urban Development, Land and Housing Management Committee. Ministers from 35 or so countries were there. The UNECE has now released a podcast of my presentation on Energy Efficiency in Heritage Buildings.

Look at how Hanoi, Vietnam is using its heritage. I really like that: 1) there is a strong focus on kids; and 2) tourism is almost never mentioned. Well done, Hanoi!

I'm in Georgia (the country, not the state) at the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development. Tbilisi, where this conference is being held, is one of my favorite places. This morning I'll keynote a session entitled "Real Estate Market and Modern Trends in the Construction Sector" but my presentation will be on why heritage conservation is the single strategy that fulfills all three of the responsibilities of sustainable development -- environmental, social, and economic.
