Barbara Ann Geris was scratching a 10X the Money ticket from the Virginia Lottery while riding home in her friend’s car. When she revealed that the ticket was a $100,000 winner, she told her friend, “Stop the car! Stop the car!”

a Virginia Lottery winner is marking their $150,000 prize not with personal gain but with generosity—donating the full amount to three nonprofit organizations serving families, health, and community.

Carrie Edwards won the prize by matching four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball number in the Sept. 8 Powerball drawing. Normally, that wins $50,000. However, the Midlothian woman spent an extra dollar for Power Play® when she bought the ticket, which tripled the prize to $150,000. She bought her ticket online, using the Virginia Lottery’s mobile app – the first time she ever bought a Lottery ticket online!

When Edward McKeown decided to contact us about his winning money when he heard from a friend which was a winner too, the jackpot stood at an estimated $1.8 billion, and everyone was talking about it.

Mr. Williams told Lottery officials he has no immediate plans for his winnings.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. Mr. Williams lives in Wise County, which received more than $7.6 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. In Fiscal Year 2025, the Lottery raised more than $901 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.

Virginia neighbors share $3 million prize

Drawing Date: 3/7/2025

March 20, 2025 - Thomas Bell and Lorraine Dimuccio have been neighbors for twenty-some years. One afternoon, they saw each other at a happy hour and got to talking. They decided to go in together and play Mega Millions. The ticket that Thomas bought ended up winning $3 million.

“I couldn’t believe it!” Lorraine later told Virginia Lottery officials. “I was stunned!” Thomas added.

The ticket was bought at the 7-Eleven at 1800 Jamestown Road in James City County, Va. It matched the first five numbers in the March 7 drawing, missing only the Mega Ball number. Normally, that would win $1 million. However, they spent an extra dollar for the Megaplier when they bought the ticket, which tripled the prize to $3 million.
