Stop Blaming Your Network

Sometimes people who have established a referral network feel unsatisfied with the referrals that they receive, and then they blame people in the network.

The truth is that if your referral network isn’t working the way you want it to, it’s your fault. When you find yourself pointing out other people’s problems, it may be time to ask if YOU are the reason your network isn’t delivering.

In this blog, I talk about four common problems that people complain about and how to effectively address them.

Remember, if you’re not getting the referrals you want, it’s your responsibility to stop blaming your network and to start taking charge of your own referral networking success.

When Andrew Jackson was given a block of cheese from a grateful dairyman has motivated me to do a “networking variation” of the idea.

BNI® Leadership Team Training

Something I always hear at this time of year is "Why do I need to complete the online Leadership Team training again?" Many BNI members believe that since they previously completed the BNI U training six months ago and they are planning to continue in the same role, they do not need to log into BNI U to redo their online Leadership Team Training again this month.

It is imperative that ALL BNI MEMBERS, no matter what role they hold in their chapter, complete the online leadership position training in BNI U every 6 months. Leadership roles are regularly being updated and different policies and procedures for leadership roles are modified. For example, we have new BNI Branding policies and an official social media guideline manual for BNI chapters.

All members of the Leadership Team must be up to date with the latest training so they can effectively serve the chapter in their role. Take the time over the next month to complete your online training before April 1st.

For International Networking Week BNI Washington DC is recognizing a member from each chapter for their service to their fellow chapter members. While it does take a village to make a chapter great it also takes leaders to be a role model for other members. Jill Hicks was the chapter Member of Excellence for last year.

Why Grow Your Sales Team?
It's the formula for success in BNI.

Years ago, I learned that there is a dramatic correlation between the size of a group and the number of referrals that are generated by that group. Groups that are under 20 members tend to generate far fewer referrals proportionately as groups that are over 20. The math proves it.

In the first graph, there are 16 people and you see that 16 people have 256 connections. In the second graph, there are 32 people with 1024 connections. So if you double the size from 16 to 32, you quadruple the number of connections. Chapters with 16 people have 256 connections while chapters with 32 people have 1024 connections.

Chapters that were twice the size were passing more than twice the referrals. It was substantially more, like three times the referrals. I could never figure out why that worked until a mathematician showed this to me. He said this is why it works. There are just a whole lot more connections- four times the number of total connections.
