We're announcing our next endorsee for the 2026 election cycle!

For decades, Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) has been one of the most prominent leaders on behalf of nuclear arms control and non-proliferation in Congress. Council for a Livable World has been proud to support him throughout his career, including in each of his Senate races to date. Sen. Markey first emerged as a national figure on nuclear issues in the early 1980s during the Cold War and throughout his career, Markey has argued that nuclear weapons policy should prioritize diplomacy, reductions and verification rather than arms racing and modernization. Institutionally, Markey has helped lead congressional efforts through the Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group, which he co-chairs. In that role, he has pushed for policies emphasizing diplomacy, treaty verification, reduced nuclear risks, and eventual movement toward disarmament.

We're announcing our next endorsee for the 2026 election cycle!

Dr. Maxine Dexter (OR-03) was first elected to this seat in 2024. In her short time in Congress, Rep. Dexter co-sponsored Rep. McGovern’s resolution “urging the United States to lead the world back from the brink of nuclear war and halt and reverse the nuclear arms race” in December. She also co-sponsored multiple War Powers resolutions and signed a letter last Fall opposing President Trump’s push to resume explosive nuclear weapons testing. Rep. Dexter has voted in favor of limiting President Trump’s future actions in Iran. Earlier this year, Rep. Dexter commented that the war in Iran is unconstitutional and that President Trump has not presented a compelling case or identified an imminent threat that made military action necessary.

"As we stare at the abyss of another possible war in the Middle East, Netanyahu's breathless 2002 testimony should serve as a reminder to avoid advice from the congenitally wrong,” wrote Executive Director John Tierney in 2018.

“Netanyahu’s breathless 2002 testimony should serve as a reminder to avoid advice from the congenitally wrong, no matter how certain they may seem.”
