Providing governments with revenue to fight crime reduces incentives for emigration. Preliminary research indicates that approximately 3,000 Guatemalan victims of violence against women (VAW) considered migrating to the United States to escape the violence. Further research is needed to understand how measures to prevent and address VAW shape migration decisions. In LEAD’s first year, Making Cents supported an analysis for USAID Missions in Guatemala, Haiti, the Kyrgyz Republic, Senegal, West Bank/Gaza, and Zambia, researching various forms of VAW. The goal is to establish regional technical assistance hubs and promote the utilization of existing tools and resources. Learn more: https://ow.ly/nr9k50USEMT

Making Cents supported USAID’s Task Order to advance stability in LAC by supporting stronger governance, democratic practices and values, and safer communities for citizens. Under this Task Order, we developed a cross-sectoral assessment to provide USAID/Dominican Republic with ideas and recommendations to more meaningfully engage with the private sector, national, and local government to support youth services. Closer relationships with the U.S. lead to more jobs and higher growth in LAC countries, reducing incentives for emigration and providing governments with revenue to fight crime and invest at home. https://ow.ly/ijaQ50USEwf

We are looking back at the power of volunteering for building resilience. If the COVID-19 pandemic taught us anything, it was how important community is in our daily lives, especially during times of crises. Youth volunteers came out in force to spread information about healthy behavior and practices, combat the proliferation of online misinformation, and organize themselves to reach the most isolated and marginalized community groups. Volunteer Services Overseas (VSO) partnered with YP2LE for an exclusive webinar to unpack their research findings on the effect of the pandemic on youth's personal journeys and to better understand their motivations and the factors that enabled their proactive responses.
