𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀
What is the current market landscape for performance venue utilization across performing arts centers? How do cultural institutions strategically manage these spaces to drive earned income?

These are the questions that kept one of our performing arts center members up at night—leading ABA to take action. Through an executive benchmark survey and in-depth interviews with eight cultural and performing arts organizations with strong venue rental strategies, we explored how institutions are optimizing their spaces for financial sustainability and long-term success.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:
• As an important source of 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲, organizations are careful to balance commercial and mission-aligned renters. To ensure financial stewardship, many organizations are strategic with their 𝗺𝗶𝘅 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀, combining more lucrative commercial partners with non-profit local and artistic renters.
• Most organizations 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀. While these discounts are widespread, the rates vary between organizations and can also differ based on the type of organization and their relationship with the venue.
• 𝗧𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲, organizations are concentrating on 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲, expanding the size and diversity of available rental spaces, strengthening fundraising efforts, and enhancing renter retention.

If we had to pick just one word to describe the past few days spent at the Association of British Orchestras conference, it'd have to be energising.

We've had honest, positive and ambitious conversations, and been inspired countless times — perhaps most particularly by the work that orchestras are doing to innovate and broaden audiences for classical music. Our collective brain is now officially firing with all the ways we can support this through the vision for our 'Hall for All'.

A huge thank you to ABO for inviting us to speak and chair sessions, as well as the Advisory Board for the Arts, The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, and all those who joined on the panels, from organisations including Paraorchestra, Southbank Centre, BBC Radio 3, BBC Proms, Manchester Camerata and AMC Gospel Choir - Audrey Mattis Chorale.
