First responders and community members are invited to walk together in remembrance during the annual 9/11 Memorial Walk, beginning at Crab Park.
Following the walk, all first responders are invited to enjoy a complimentary Appreciation Breakfast as our way of saying thank you for their dedication and service.

Last night, members of Bunyan Volunteer Fire Department continued building on the technical rescue skills we’ve been learning during this month’s training.

After working on basic rope skills and equipment familiarization last week, members spent more time rappelling and becoming more comfortable working on rope from elevated positions.

We then brought those individual skills together by building and operating a rope rescue system designed to raise and lower both a patient and an attendant. Members worked through patient packaging in the SKED, rigging the system, operating the haul and lowering lines, and managing the patient and attendant throughout the evolution.

Training like this is about progression. We start with the fundamentals, practice them until they become familiar, and then begin combining those skills into the systems and teamwork required for an actual rescue.

Last night, members of Bunyan Volunteer Fire Department spent some time getting hands-on with our technical rescue equipment.

The training focused on introducing members to basic rope rescue operations, including ascending and descending on rope, equipment familiarization, and working safely from elevated positions.

Members also worked through an evolution involving the removal of a patient from an elevated position, giving them an opportunity to see how individual rope skills come together during a rescue operation.

Technical rescue requires teamwork, communication, confidence in the equipment, and plenty of practice. Last night was about building that foundation and giving our members experience they can continue to develop during future training.

Congratulations to Captain Doug Bissette of Pinetown Volunteer Fire Department, who was inducted as the 100th President of the North Carolina State Firefighters’ Association during its 139th Annual Meeting, held last week at the South Atlantic Fire Rescue Expo in Raleigh, North Carolina!

Doug’s theme for the year, “Attitude Reflects Leadership,” will guide him as he leads the Association and serves firefighters across our state. He knows that good leadership begins with the right attitude, and that the example set by today’s leaders and mentors shapes the next generation and helps move the fire service into the future.

Doug’s lifelong passion and love for the fire service have guided him throughout his life and career. It is a calling he shares with his family and has proudly passed along to his son, Keegan.

Please join us in congratulating President Bissette and wishing him a successful and meaningful year of leadership!
