When should you outsource fulfillment to a 3PL?

For many growing ecommerce brands, the answer comes before the warehouse is completely overwhelmed.

If rising order volume means more time spent managing inventory, packing orders, fixing fulfillment errors, negotiating shipping rates, or finding warehouse space, your in-house fulfillment operation may already be limiting growth.

A third-party logistics (3PL) provider can handle warehousing, inventory management, pick and pack, ecommerce fulfillment, shipping, and returns while giving your business room to scale without adding the same fixed overhead.

Some of the clearest signs it’s time to consider outsourcing fulfillment:

→ Order volume is outgrowing your team
→ Fulfillment costs keep increasing
→ Shipping and inventory issues are affecting customers
→ You’re running out of warehouse space
→ Operations are taking time away from product, sales, and growth

The goal isn’t simply to outsource logistics. It’s to build a fulfillment operation that can grow with the business.

When order volume increases, a bigger warehouse isn’t always the first answer.

An inefficient warehouse layout can create unnecessary travel time, slower picking, fulfillment bottlenecks, and higher labor costs long before you actually run out of space.

Before expanding your footprint, look at how inventory moves through your operation. Smarter SKU placement, shorter pick paths, organized receiving, and a more efficient warehouse flow can help you increase fulfillment capacity using the space you already have.

Optimize the movement before expanding the footprint.

What is inventory shrinkage, and how much is normal?

Shrinkage is stock you've lost to theft, error, or damage, the difference between your records and a physical count. Most operations run somewhere around 1 to 2 percent, but anything higher is a signal something's wrong.
Our new guide explains how to calculate your shrinkage rate, what causes it, and the practical steps that actually bring it down.

Does OSHA require a specific warehouse temperature? Is there an OSHA standard for pallet racking? What aisle width do you need?

The honest answers: no, no, and no specific number. But that does not mean those things are unregulated — they are enforced through 1910.176, forklift rules, and the General Duty Clause.

Our new guide explains which OSHA standards actually apply to warehouses, the violations that get cited most, and includes a 12-point safety checklist you can use as a self-audit.

What is warehouse automation, and is it worth it for your business?

It ranges from barcode scanning to full robotics: AMRs, conveyors, automated storage, and goods-to-person picking. Done right, it cuts labor cost per order, speeds up fulfillment, and improves accuracy.

Our new guide breaks down the types, benefits, costs, and how to start small, plus how a 3PL gives you automation without buying the equipment yourself.
