Every time you say yes, you're also saying no to something else.

Yes to another meeting.
No to dinner with your family.

Yes to one more project.
No to the workout that keeps you healthy.

Yes to helping someone else.
No to the work only you can do.

Time is finite.

The question isn't whether you're spending it.
It's whether you're investing it where it matters most.

Before your next "yes," ask yourself:
What is this costing me?

The most successful leaders I've coached aren't better because they say yes more often.

They're better because they know what deserves a no.

Almost 7 years ago now, I became a StoryBrand Certified Guide.

And after hundreds of conversations with business owners and leaders, I’m more convinced than ever:
Clarity is incredibly valuable. (and not just for marketing)

Most businesses don’t realize they have a clarity problem.

They know what they do.
They know why they’re good at it.

But somewhere between what’s in their head and what the customer hears, the message gets muddy.

For the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of helping businesses simplify that story.

Sometimes that means a website.
Sometimes it’s a sales conversation, an email campaign, or an entire marketing strategy.

Sometimes it's unifying the whole internal team around a new initiative or direction.

And increasingly, I’ve found the same principles apply to leadership too:

understand who you’re serving, communicate clearly, give people a plan, and help them see where you’re going together.

I’m grateful to Donald Miller and . JJ Peterson, and the entire StoryBrand community for seven years of sharpening this craft.

When someone tells you they're going to be on a show called Bodies in the Water, it's usually worth asking a few follow-up questions.

Over the years, I've spent a lot of time on rivers. Most of those stories end with great memories.
This one ended up on TV (which isn't usually a good sign)

This show isn't for the faint of heart, and I know there are locals here in our Washougal community who remember this very real story and may even know the folks this episode is about, so I want to be sensitive to that. The episode of Bodies in the Water goes live tonight at 10/9c on Investigation Discovery (ID).

It's a fascinating story that I'm thankfully only tangentially involved with. My friend and fellow kayak guide Shawn Altman made the discovery and aided in the recovery of the victim while leading local club members on what was supposed to be a carefree day on the water.

Had a great time speaking at the Better Together Conference for Edward Jones alongside leaders who care deeply about helping people thrive, not just perform.

One idea seemed to resonate more than any other:
We've been told for years to pursue "work/life balance."

I think that's a cruel myth.

Balance is a static destination, but life is a free-flowing river—one that constantly pushes against the banks of our own limitations.

If you're building a business, leading a team, raising a family, pursuing a dream, or navigating change, you're moving.

And motion actually REQUIRES imbalance.

Every meaningful accomplishment involves seasons of intensity, uncertainty, growth, and pressure. The goal isn't to eliminate those things. The goal is to learn how to move through them without letting the things that matter most drift away.

That's the central idea behind the book I'm currently writing:
Work-Life Flow... NOT "balance"

High performers don't fail because they want too much.

They fail because they're using frameworks and systems that can't support what they're trying to build.

As AI continues to reshape the workplace, technical skills will become more accessible and more easily replicated.

What won't?
✔️ Trust
✔️ Leadership
✔️ Communication
✔️ Healthy working relationships
✔️ The ability to navigate conflict, feedback, and change

The leaders and teams who thrive in the years ahead won't simply be the ones with the best AI tools.

They'll be the ones who know how to work together, adapt together, and move forward with purpose—together.

Business owners work too hard to get played by paperwork cosplay.
This notice ⬇️ looks official.

It isn’t.

Here’s how these trademark renewal scams usually work:

⚠️ Fake renewal notices. Official-looking letters demanding payment years before anything is due. 📇 Unofficial “registries” Pay-to-play databases with zero legal value.

📞 Impersonation calls or emails. They claim to be from the United States Patent and Trademark Office. They create urgency. They ask for money or info. The real USPTO never does this by phone.

💸 Overpriced “services” They offer to “handle” renewals for wildly inflated fees you don’t need to pay. The tell is always the same: Urgency. Confusion. Authority theater.

My message for my business owner friends today: You didn’t build your business by being careless.

Slow down. Read the fine print. Verify before you pay. Protect your brand. Don’t feed the scammers!
