Working in the intertidal zone of Sitka has been a unique opportunity for the True North Sustainable Development Solutions (TNSDS) cultural resources team. Supporting the Sitka Seawalk project meant working late into the night to align with the lowest tides and experiencing Southeast Alaska’s winter weather-including several inches of snowfall during our visit. These conditions are all part of working in a landscape where land and sea meet, a shoreline that has supported human activity and marine resource management for thousands of years. We are grateful to the Sitka community for the opportunity to work in such a beautiful and culturally rich place and look forward to returning later this year to continue our work along Sitka’s remarkable shoreline.

TNSDS spent the weekend volunteering to process tree samples (sand them down) and count tree rings! Trees are amazing biological creatures. As one of the longest living organisms on our planet, we can learn a lot from them and especially from counting tree rings. Besides learning the age of the tree, under the right conditions we can date archaeological sites, we can determine the past climate conditions, fire history of the area and various other environmental disturbances are all recorded by trees in their annual rings.
So next time you are feeling overwhelmed with the state of the world, I invite you to go sit with a tree. Lean back, breathe deeply, and remember that the world has been through countless seasons - and so have you."

TNSDS is working with the Clarks Point Village Council to relocate individuals from an existing gravesite that are in danger of being disturbed due to coastal erosion and rising sea levels. Earlier this year TNSDS worked to clear away surface debris from the cemetery to prepare the site for excavation. The City of Clarks Point provided support by moving large debris with their backhoe. This ongoing project is extremely important to the community of Clarks Point and will help them significantly with updating and maintaining their local cemeteries ensuring their elders have a safe final resting place within the community they loved.

SKAGWAY MONITORING

This year TNSDS has the privilege of archaeological monitoring for the Skagway State Street Rehabilitation Project. Skagway and the surrounding area are located within a National Historic Landmark dedicated to the events of the Klondike Gold Rush from 1897 to 1899. Artifacts left over from the Gold Rush can still be found under the surface scattered throughout town. Monitoring construction efforts will ensure that any significant discoveries will be properly recorded and protected to preserve Alaska’s rich history.

TNSDS Project Archaeologist Walker Burgett, MA, and college intern Mason Stepp from Western Carolina University carried out an aerial reconnaissance using a drone at the Johnson River Bridge, located along the Alaska Highway, just south of Delta Junction. TNSDS has been utilizing drones to help identify archaeological sites and areas of high potential for encountering cultural resources. This aerial reconnaissance will provide guidance to a team of archaeologists who will be conducting a pedestrian archaeological survey this summer season to identify and evaluate a historic district associated with the construction of the bridge during World War II.

Earlier this year TNSDS had the pleasure of conducting Archaeological monitoring in Clarks Point, Alaska. The city of Clarks Point is going to construct a road from Clarks Point to Ekuk and TNSDS was asked to participate by monitoring the bore hole drilling necessary to assess the presence and amount of gravel that could be locally sourced for the road construction project. The weather while challenging at times, also highlighted the picturesque aspects of Clarks Point!
