Campfires are one of the best parts of an Alaska summer. Breathing wood smoke isn’t.
Wood smoke contains fine particles that can irritate the eyes and lungs, worsen asthma, and contribute to serious heart and respiratory problems. Sit upwind so the smoke blows away from you, avoid lingering in the smoke, and take extra care with children and anyone who has a heart or lung condition. Pregnant women should also take care!
