🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ One of the hardest things to explain is the value of good design until you see the damage of bad design.

This is USAA's homepage. One of the most trusted financial brands in the country. I logged on this morning and just thought 🤦‍♀️. Please tell me their in a transition phase.

Here's how this meeting probably went:

CEO: "We need to represent every branch of the military, list all of our services above the fold."

Creative team: takes marching orders

Result: A cluttered hero, competing CTAs, mismatched blues, and text nobody is reading.

You have 3 seconds to capture a user's attention. This spends all 3 of them overwhelming them.

We don't intend to call people out, the goal is to educate through example. It's very difficult to explain a decade worth of design education and digital user behavior psychology

The engagement will drop. They will wonder why. They will have have countless meetings and throw more marketing $$ dollars at it, all while design holds the keys to the answer. 🔑🔑

🙌🙌🙌🌊🏖️ High fives all the way around!
Beach Painting & Construction booked a half-day content shoot with us — 4-6 hours on site capturing content for their website, social, and ads. We provided a full plan for the day, pre-drafted scripts for video and worked with the owner to refine everything beforehand. We had the best time with their team. The hardest part typically isn’t the camera work, it’s helping people feel comfortable when this isn’t something they do everyday. Some folks thrive with candid, in-the-moment shots. Others do better with a clear plan and direction. We try to read the room and meet people where they are. We have fun with ice breaker questions 🤪 Lots of laughs, lots of great content. A hugely successful day! 🌊🏖️

🌟Client spotlight: Gale Force Coffee Roaster based in Palmer, Alaska. I’ll sing it from the Alaska mountaintops — local clients are the best. 🏔️
In a world that’s all hustle and business, these guys are chill and down to earth. Solid good people. The kind we want to support.
They kindly hooked me up with a fresh coffee selection!
If you’re looking for a local roaster, check them out. They offer pickups at Backcountry Bike & Ski and REI . ☕ I’m trying to convince them into social media, but I think they’re too smart to get pulled into this madness 🫣😉

😩💎🤩 Posting about my work does NOT come naturally to me. I know I need to in order to grow, but it’s such a hurdle — it feels self-promoting and gross 🤢And blasting my feed with my own face is enough to make me want to go hide in the bushes for a week. 🫣

It’s the same thing so many of my clients struggle with. I 100% get it — I’m a work in progress myself. We’re in this together. (One hack: just hire someone else to do it for you. Quick fix to all the baggage 🤪)

For now, I’ll stick to what I’m good at and what comes naturally — gratitude.

So here’s that: I am so thankful for the incredible humans and businesses I get to collaborate with. Every single one is a company I believe in — doing good work, adding real value, and leading with integrity. And I LOVE that I get to support them. Seriously gives me chills. 💛

My clients aren’t just mission-driven businesses. They’re your contractors, realtors, schools, and more — but they all lead with intention and genuinely care about their clients and what they put out into the world. (That’s where we come in!)

We don’t work with crappy people and we don’t put crap out into the world. Firm.

We’re selective about who we work with. We only work with kind people who are delivering real value. 💛

Why I Do This Business: Helping Companies Show Up Online —- I share my why from a networking event exercise. I explain that I do this business because the web is messy and frustrating, and many incredible businesses struggle to represent themselves well online. When potential customers visit a website that’s confusing and disappointing, they leave without converting. But when users land on a clear, professional site where everything makes sense, they immediately trust the business and want to move forward. Giving back is a core part of what we’re building at Alpine Design & Consulting. We may be small, but we show up where we can.

This weekend at our local ski resort’s annual slush cup, a skier suffered a devastating crash and is likely facing paralysis. He’s a ski coach and someone deeply loved by the community.

If you’re able, I invite you to join me in supporting his recovery:

Every bit helps 🤍

Another amazing client in the books! Beach Painting & Construction in the Outer Banks, North Carolina came to us with a primary goal of needing to recruit more quality job applicants.

*Using our proven 10-point framework we uncovered a lot more needs.*
• The real issue wasn’t hiring—it was brand perception and clarity.
• Their website didn’t clearly communicate who they were, why they were a great place to work, or even operate under a single, consistent brand.

We fixed many things holding the business back.

What we did:
✔️ UX audit (1 week)
✔️ Brand clarity + new logo direction
✔️ Business name alignment
✔️ Clear hiring page
✔️ Elevated their business with video and top imagery
✔️ Messaging + content support
✔️ High-impact art direction
✔️ Video editing
Timeline: 10 weeks

Results:
→ Clear hiring funnel
→ Strong first impression
→ Unified brand

On the theme of sharing helpful, educational content…and painfully putting my mug on the internet 😭😭 I’m powering past that to deliver helpful info 🩷 Should you use AI to create a logo?
If that makes the most sense for you, sure. Just be aware of the obstacles you’re going to run into:

1. It won’t scale well
Most AI logos are raster images, meaning they’ll get blurry when resized.
This becomes a problem fast—storefront signage, merch, business cards, envelopes, invoices… all need clean, scalable files.

2. You won’t get the files you actually need
A proper logo package includes:
• multiple file types (SVG, PNG, EPS, etc.)
• stacked + horizontal layouts
• versions for light/dark backgrounds

AI doesn’t give you that—so you’ll end up patching things together later.

3. Background issues (you AI’ers know what I’m talking about)
Most AI-generated logos come with solid backgrounds.
Transparent versions aren’t always clean or usable, which limits where and how you can apply your logo.

DO use AI for the following!
• concept exploration
• visual direction
• inspiration to hand to your designer

A logo isn’t the end goal—it’s the starting point of a much bigger brand system.

When I started this business, I almost called it “Do Good Design.” That idea, using design as a force for good, has stayed with me and continues to shape how we work, who we partner with, and what we prioritize.

Part of our mission at Alpine Design is to give back. We offer a 10% discount to mission-driven organizations and contribute our time through volunteer work whenever possible. This is just the beginning. Our long-term vision is to give back in a much bigger way.

Giving back isn’t just something we talk about. It’s something we actively do.
