We would like to thank all neighboring departments that answered the call for assistance during yesterday's wheat fire. Without your support this fire would not have been contained so quickly.
From the farmer who selflessly acted without pause offering up his tractor and disc, to amazing sack lunches donated and delivered by Knemeyers, and to the Volunteers of Douglas County Fire District #1, we are grateful for you as members of this community. You are the ones that really make a difference and set examples for others. Thank you for your hard work and sacrifice to keep our communities safe.
We're grateful no injuries occurred during the event but are saddened by the loss of such vital equipment during this critical time of harvest for this family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
As we move into the back half of the week, we would like to remind people that we're moving into Red Flag type conditions. Please be extremely careful with equipment and anything that has the potential to produce enough heat to start combustion. Accidents can and do happen, so be as prepared as you can with fire extinguishers, shovels, or sources of water. Our resources are thin and our Volunteers also work regular jobs slowing response times. Also, responding to continuous calls on top of work can start to wear them down over time.
Another difficulty we and other districts are working through is locating or spotting fires early in the low visibility, due to heavy smoke. If you see something please report it as quickly as possible. If we all do our part, we can hopefully prevent the catastrophic events like those affecting our neighboring communities. Please keep them in your thoughts as well.
Thank you again and be safe out there!
