Two incredibly rare pieces of American tool history are hitting the auction block on October 31!
These lots feature the genius of Birdsill Holly, one of the most prolific inventors of the 19th century. While Holly is widely famous for inventing the modern city fire hydrant system (1869) and centralized district steam heating (1877), he actually started his patent legacy in the 1850s by revolutionizing mechanical hand planes. Before his Holly Manufacturing Company shifted entirely to massive municipal water pumps, hydraulics, and steam systems, it produced some of the very first commercially successful metallic hand planes in the United States.

Lot 353: Birdsill Holly Patent Smoothing Plane
The Details: A nice example of the 9" sole plane based on Holly's historic 1852 patent.
Design: A rare transitional hybrid. It combines the classic form of Figure 39a from PTAMPIA I with the distinctive fluted sole and cutter holder variations shown in Figure 39b.

Lot 313: Birdsill Holly Block Plane
The Details: Unmarked but resembles the unmistakable Holly design. 8" cast-metal block plane featuring a 1-3/4" cutter.
Design: This specimen perfectly resembles the rare variant illustrated in PTAMPIA I, Figure 40, utilizing an innovative slide-in lever cap rather than Holly’s more common brass wedge design.

Because Holly pivoted his company to utilities so early on in his career, these early 1850s cast-metal planes are exceptionally rare and highly prized by tool collectors. Don’t miss your chance to own these exceptional pieces!
