Lakewood is celebrating 37 years of business this week! This is marked by the blooming of the roses each year around this time.

Here are a few words from Ben Stamp, assistant winemaker at Lakewood Vineyards, about this exciting anniversary:

It’s strange for me to think about how much more time I have spent here at Lakewood than anywhere else in my life. I was three weeks old when we opened the tasting room to the public in June of 1989. I am often reminded by some of our original fans that I spent my first year crawling around the cellar. 37 years later I’m chasing my own son around the farm, encouraging his fascination with tractors, which I bet he will be driving through the rows before we know it.

And so this next generation will come up much the very same way we did despite a very different world. As I look through old Polaroids from the early days of the winery, I’m struck by how much has changed on the surface, and struck again by how consistent our values have remained. The values of hard work, the commitment to cooperation, and the importance of stewardship. That’s the essence of Lakewood from the beginning and that’s what we bring to every vintage.

Our little ones will grow up with those values, which should serve them in whatever they choose to do. I’d be lying if I said I don’t hope they choose to come back and carry that legacy forward.

🍷 Meet Abby Wilkens!

Abby is a second-generation winemaker at Lakewood Vineyards in the Finger Lakes Region. She majored in Enology and Viticulture at Cornell University. Upon graduation, she worked in the wine industries in New Zealand, Central Florida and Oregon before returning to the family business in late 2014 where she has worked the past 11+ years. Abby is involved in all aspects of winemaking at Lakewood Vineyards, where she works with the rest of the team to produce 40,000 cases of wine annually, from over 20 different varietals.

💬 When asked what makes FLIWC so special, Abby shared: “The Finger Lakes International Wine Competition is at the intersection of an incredible cause, thoughtful, experienced judges, and world-class wines and spirits. It's an honor to be involved!”

This recognition reflects decades of dedication from growers, winemakers, and industry partners across the Finger Lakes. We were proud to raise a glass alongside so many who have helped shape our region into a world-class wine destination.
