Good morning on this chilly Minnesota morning,

Something that comes up a lot and should be addressed; forestry mulching and land clearing.

Let’s be clear they are two very different actions and each has their own specific use. They are not interchangeable.

Example, I have a customer who I talked with that bought a property and wanted to clear the lot. He said he liked the way the property looked after it was mulched and wanted it to look that way. Out of curiosity I asked him what he planned to do with the property, his answer build a cabin.

Mulching is not an appropriate way to clear a lot for a building. The stumps are still there and have to be addressed by the excavator, except, now he has no idea that there are stumps left underground or how many.

Land clearing in this case is the better option. Obviously it is slower and more expensive but it is the clear answer.

That brings us to brush hogging. Although you don’t get the same finish as a mulcher you are able to clear the underbrush and that will definitely make the site look better.

This client had a legitimate concern about what forestry mulching could do for their property.
1). Air flow through the property was number one, as we walked you could feel the heavy damp air even though there was a light wind. This caused mold on the cabin and moss grew on everything, and did I mention the mosquitoes.
2). Increased visibility of the property. You can't see it in the pictures but there is a creek that runs through the property and having done this they can now see it and it's no longer a safety issue.
3). Visual appeal! This property looks so much better after the project was completed and can be maintained with equipment the owner already has.
