Moss doesn't actually hurt the tree and is considered harmless but too much can be a bad thing.
When "Harmless" Moss Becomes an issue:
While moss isn't inherently harmful, an excessive amount can cause indirect mechanical issues, especially on trees that are already stressed or declining.
Shade and Photosynthesis: If an oak tree's canopy is already thinning due to age or stress, an explosion of heavy moss can block sunlight from reaching the interior lower branches. If the leaves can't get sun, those specific branches can die back.
Weight and Wind Load: Spanish moss acts like a sponge. During heavy Florida rainstorms, it absorbs an immense amount of water, drastically increasing the weight on the branches. If a branch is already structurally weak, structurally compromised, or rotting, the added weight of wet moss—combined with high winds—can cause that limb to snap.
