Today's tip is about export presets in Lightroom. When you click the box to select a preset, you are unable to make changes within the preset. This can be a problem if you need to change something such as the export location. If you click on the name of the preset and leave the checkbox empty, you can change the setting while keeping the preset as your starting point.

For more complicated layer transforming, converting the layer to a Smart Object works best. It allows you to rotate, resize, and still transforms from the original edge for things like perspective transform. If you don't use a Smart Object, it will create a rectangular box around your layer to transform from, which is inaccurate if you are trying to keep the perspective true. This is very useful for mock-ups and digital backgrounds.

As an editor, people often export images as DNG* files from Lightroom to send to me. Sometimes I see the white balance at a different scale. If it has a middle value of "0" for temperature and tint, I know it has been saved from a non-RAW file. If it has the actual color temperature range of 2000 to 50000, it was saved from a RAW file. This can affect the editing I apply or alert me to a file that was accidentally exported.

*DNG is a highly adjustable file with a file format that is intended to be accessible long-term. Camera RAW file formats change with manufacturers and their updates.

Lightroom tip: If your sky looks bland, you should try a brush adjustment with dehaze. Dehaze adds contrast and saturation, which can make those clouds pop!

Lightroom tip: If you apply keywords after import, you can sort by Keyword> none to see what still needs a keyword. I avoid keywording on import for this reason. You can always go back and add keywords that apply to all photos in the batch at the end. I do this to make sure no photos are missed.

After a Windows update, I was having annoying problems in Photoshop. A pop-up brush tool panel would appear when I was just trying to use a brush. With other tools, I would have to wait for a white circle to complete. It was simply a check box in my Wacom Tablet Properties that needed to be unchecked. If this sounds familiar to you, go into your Wacom Tablet Properties software, go to mapping, and UNCHECK the "Use Windows Ink" box that I circled in the screenshot.

I've seen a lot of people struggle when masking and editing hair. The photo shows some adjustments you can make in the brush panel to create more believable hair and hair masks. The Fade control in Shape Dynamics adds taper. Scattering adds texture. I use a little scattering for most human hair, and more scattering for horse hair. Adding Fade Opacity is another option if the ends are looking artificial.
Once you find a setting you like, save it as a new brush preset to use with a single click. The samples are shown at 100% opacity to see easier, but I am typically using 30-60% opacity. Slightly varied size and opacity appears more natural.
