National Farm to School Month starts today. It is a nationwide effort to connect kids, schools and local agriculture, and Wisconsin districts are part of that conversation whether or not they have formally started sourcing local food yet. Over the rest of October we will share what farm-to-school work can look like in practice for Wisconsin schools.

Late September and early October is peak harvest for many of Wisconsin's storage and fall crops. It is also one of the busiest stretches of the year for the farms Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative works with, moving volume from the field into orders for schools, hospitals and other buyers in Wisconsin.

WE’RE HIRING: TRANSPORTATION & DISPATCH COORDINATOR

Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative is looking for an organized, dependable professional to help coordinate our daily delivery and freight operations.

In this full-time role, you’ll help keep loads moving safely, accurately, and on schedule by coordinating:

Drivers, trucks, trailers, and daily routes
Pickup and delivery appointments
Bills of lading and transportation paperwork
Brokered freight and freight-provider communication
Driver schedules, route progress, ELDs, and required logs
Delays, equipment issues, detention fees, and lumper charges

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, communicates clearly, handles multiple priorities well, and can solve problems quickly in a fast-paced environment.
Previous experience in dispatch, trucking, logistics, warehousing, or transportation is preferred.

School purchasing has its own rules, and Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative is not in the business of working around them. The easiest way to start is a conversation about your district's needs, the products that may be available, your purchasing requirements, and what a realistic first order might look like. From there, WFHC can talk through how working together would fit within your district's existing purchasing process.

A lot of what makes local sourcing hard for schools has nothing to do with the food itself. It is the logistics: coordinating pickup windows, managing multiple delivery schedules, and keeping track of several vendor relationships at once. Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative brings that together through one coordinated delivery relationship, which is often the difference between a district trying local sourcing and a district actually sticking with it.

Delivery & Warehouse Support Associate

Join our food hub team in a full-time role supporting deliveries and warehouse operations. You’ll work alongside our straight-truck and refrigerated-truck drivers to help get orders to their destinations accurately and efficiently.

In this role, you’ll:
Ride along on delivery routes and assist at drop-off locations
-Help load and unload trucks
-Keep delivery paperwork organized and accurate
-Pitch in with warehouse work as needed

Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative's work with schools and other institutional buyers is only part of the picture. Tend & Table is WFHC's direct-to-consumer program, bringing Wisconsin-grown produce into home kitchens through a subscription box, the same aggregation model behind the cooperative's institutional work, just built for households instead of districts. Aggregation is a simple idea once you say it out loud: instead of several individual farms each trying to land an institutional contract on their own, those farms combine what they grow into orders large enough for a school district or other institutional buyer to work with. Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative handles that coordination so farms can run their businesses and stay focused on growing.
