Many places claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day after the civil war in 1866, holding both formal and informal ceremonies for the soldiers that had fallen in battle. In 1868 the Grand Army of the Republic established Decoration Day. Arlington National Cemetery held the first large observance that May.

Today Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed the last Monday in May (THIS WEEKEND). You can find community observances, parades, etc by searching for them here on Facebook. You can also pay tribute with a minute of silence during a national moment of remembrance at 3pm local time.
