Overwhelm narrows attention.

It pulls your focus toward everything that is wrong, everything that feels urgent, and everything you cannot control.

Perspective widens it again.

It helps you recognize what is still steady, what remains within your control, and what deserves your attention next.

You don’t always need a different situation. Sometimes you need a different view.

“When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
—Psalm 61:2

Ironman 70.3 Ruidoso gave us a lot of moments I won’t forget. This was one of them. While the transition area was still being set up, these wild horses wandered through.

In a week filled with preparation and anticipation for what was coming next, they gave us a reason to stop and simply take in the moment.

Maybe we need more of that.

Sometimes we become so focused on the next milestone that we barely allow ourselves to recognize the one we just reached.

The next goal.
The next challenge.
The next thing to improve.

Goals matter. Ambition matters. Wanting to improve matters. But if every finish line immediately becomes another starting line, we can lose connection with the meaning of what we’re pursuing.

Ambition and appreciation don’t have to compete.

Purpose has a way of bringing us back.

Back to what matters.
Back to who matters.
Back to the reason we started.

Achievements will come and go. Seasons will begin and end.

Take in what you’ve accomplished. Recognize what the journey has given you. Remember the people who have been part of it.

Then keep moving forward—but don’t become so focused on what’s next that you lose sight of why any of it matters in the first place.

What if the most important part of a season isn’t what happened during it…but what you choose to carry forward?

Every season leaves us with something.

A lesson.
A habit.
A new perspective.

Being intentional is choosing not to leave those lessons behind.

Because growth isn’t defined by what you’ve experienced.

It’s revealed in how you live because of it.
