We are incredibly proud to see ohDEER Martha’s Vineyard featured in The Martha's Vineyard Times!

Martha’s Vineyard is facing a serious tick crisis, mentioned frequently in our Tick Talk newsletter and on national news. The Island has an average of 53 deer per square mile, compared with the state’s target of 12 to 18. Concerns about rising cases of tick-borne illnesses like Lyme and Alpha gal have led to new local clinics, research initiatives like and growing demand for tick mitigation.

ohDEER Martha’s Vineyard, our FIRST ever franchise location, has been helping address this public health concern through education, transparent practices and All-Natural Tick Control services since 2014. Today, the hard-working ohDEER MV team operates 5 trucks 6-7 days a week and treats approximately 100 properties each week.

Owner Mario Spindola shared “I saw the need on the Island for a safer, more conscious approach to the pest control that we normally see with the chemical applications. So families, landscapers, all the above, could enjoy their yards without poisoning the environment.”

The article also shares the experience of local homeowners who have noticed fewer ticks & deer on their property while continuing to see bees, butterflies and dragonflies. The piece raises important questions about balancing protection from tick-borne illnesses with the long-term health of the Island’s ecosystem. We believe education, transparency, responsible application practices and continued research all have an important role in that conversation. 🌿 🦌

Most of all, we are proud of the entire ohDEER Martha’s Vineyard team for working tirelessly to serve their neighbors and contribute to the health of their community. They are showing what a locally owned franchise making a positive impact on the lives of locals is all about!! 💚

Spotted lanternflies have been found in Massachusetts, and we need your help slowing their spread! 🔎

These invasive insects feed on the sap of trees, vines, and other plants. Large populations can weaken young trees, seriously damage grapevines, and leave behind sticky “honeydew” that encourages harmful sooty mold to grow.

If you spot one:
📸 Take a clear photo
👟 Squash it to prevent it from reproducing and spreading
📍 Report the sighting and location to the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources

Report it here: https://massnrc.org/pests/slfreport.aspx

Together, we can help protect Massachusetts trees, plants, and outdoor spaces!

From coast to coast, our ohDEER Development Team has been living our mission to Enjoy More Time Outside this summer! ☀️🌿

Leah and Colleen soaked up the outdoors in the Northeast, Bryan explored the Midwest, Sarah enjoyed the summer in the Mid-Atlantic, and Jereme made the most of the West Coast.

We love helping families spend more time outdoors, and we make sure to follow our own advice, too! How have you enjoyed more time outside this summer?

See a spotted lanternfly? Take a photo, report it and then squash it!

Spotted lanternflies may look interesting, but they are an invasive species that can damage trees, plants and crops.

If you find one in Massachusetts, upload a photo and report the sighting here: https://massnrc.org/pests/slfreport.aspx

While wooded trails are a common place to encounter ticks, they're just as likely to be found in backyards, tall grass, leaf litter, gardens, and along the edges where lawns meet wooded areas. You don't have to be deep in the forest to come into contact with one!

Making tick checks part of your routine after spending time outdoors is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself, your family, and your pets. The sooner you find a tick, the lower the risk of it remaining attached long enough to transmit certain tick-borne diseases.

At ohDEER, we're committed to helping families control tick populations around their homes so they can spend less time worrying and enjoy more time outside! 🌿🌤
