Employee Spotlight: Introducing Gretchen Yarnall 🌿🌻

Gretchen Yarnall is an Environmental Planner at Lotus with over 30 years of experience in the transportation and infrastructure development industry. Gretchen specializes in NEPA-related studies, Environmental Justice analysis, Section 4(f)/6(f) evaluations, and works on a variety of public outreach efforts. With her many years’ experience and extensive professional contacts, Gretchen has also been an integral part of our business development efforts for the company—which she has said she finds both creative and challenging.

Like many of us at Lotus, Gretchen has worked with most of our senior staff in our past lives at previous firms and we were excited when she decided to join our team in early 2020. Little did we know at the time, but Gretchen came on board literally a few short weeks prior to the COVID quarantine and has so far spent her time with Lotus working remotely. We are all looking forward to being in an office together soon!

When she’s not working, Gretchen’s time is almost always filled with playing organized team tennis (or fun tennis with her husband and friends), skiing in the winter, kayaking in the summer, or catering to their pit bull rescue Heidi’s every whim!

Fun fact about Gretchen: she has been conversing with her pen pal from Denmark since 1984! First through letters, then email, and now Skype.

Please join us in celebrating Gretchen! Happy Teammate Tuesday! ☀️✨

“In nature nothing exists alone.” ― Rachel Carson, Silent Spring 🌿🌻

May 27 marks the 114th anniversary of the birth of renowned writer, scientist, ecologist and Pennsylvania native Rachel Carson. The publication of her book Silent Spring in 1962 marked a watershed moment in environmental science and conservation that has inspired many generations of biologists, ecologists, botanists, and environmental activists.

Her passion for the beauty of the natural world, and tireless advocation for the protection and preservation of its resources, greatly influenced the environmental regulatory framework within which we work today.

Please join us in celebrating the life and works of this remarkable woman.

Lotus Environmental is an environmental consulting firm, specializing in environmental compliance and permitting services for engineering firms, government agencies, and private developers.

Teammate Tuesday Employee Spotlight: Introducing Katherine Farrow 🌿🌱

Katherine (Kate) Farrow is the President and Founder of Lotus Environmental Consulting, LLC. Kate started Lotus in 2009 with a vision to create a firm that reflected her own values and goals. And after 12 years of continued growth and the addition of 20+ employees and two offices, it’s safe to say she’s achieved that vision!

At Lotus, Kate’s official responsibilities include business development and partnering, strategic planning, project scope development, and resident NEPA expert. Unofficially, and sometimes more importantly, Kate serves as our Chief Morale Officer - a job that has never been more important than during this past year!

When asked about her favorite aspect of her work, Kate said, “Anything that requires collaboration and teamwork – that is what I love – a group of smart and talented people working together, bouncing ideas off of each other to create the perfect approaches that win the projects and solve challenging issues.”

In her spare time, Kate enjoys hiking with her dog Scout, gardening at her house and at her local community food pantry vegetable garden, and traveling to Europe, the Bahamas and around the US with her husband. Among her many professional and personal achievements, Kate says that she is the proudest of her two daughters whom she and her husband “have raised to be strong, smart, independent women who are following their dreams and taking on the world!”

Please join us in celebrating Kate! Happy Teammate Tuesday! ☀️✨

On Friday, May 14, most of our staff gathered together for the first time in over 16 months to celebrate our COVID vaccines and the 12th anniversary of Lotus Environmental Consulting! 🎉✨ We also celebrated the upcoming weddings of some of our staff, Courtney Papinchak, Alyssa Hyziak and Corey Hovanec.

The weather was just perfect and we were able to relax and enjoy time together in person. We shared a lot of laughs and truly just enjoyed the day. We are looking forward to later this summer when our offices will be opening up on a full-time basis.

Special thanks to for the delicious (and individually bagged) lunch and to one of our Environmental Scientists, Connor Sullivan, and his family for hosting the picnic in their beautiful garden! ☀️🌿🌻 Cheers to 12 Years and to our staff on starting new chapters in their lives!

Lotus Cleans Up the Wissahickon! ☀️🌿✨

On Saturday May 8, 2021 Lotus staff members attended the Weekend Stewardship Cleanup for the Wissahickon Valley Park, organized by the Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW). The group included staff from numerous departments, including Natural Resources, Cultural Resources, and Marketing.

A few staff members scaled the banks of the Wissahickon Creek to remove various (and some unusual) objects to be sorted for trash and recycling, while the rest of the crew stuck to the roadway, and assisted with trimming brush and removing trash there.

At Lotus, our staff is encouraged to do their part every day to reduce, recycle, reuse, and restore in our own back yards. And what better way than to cleanup one of Philadelphia’s most beloved parks?

The Friends of the Wissahickon is one of the nation’s oldest non-profits, established in 1924. Encompassing over 2,700 members, its mission is to ‘conserve the natural beauty and wildness of Wissahickon Valley Park’. Through various plans and initiatives, FOW and its volunteers are able to plant native species, preserve trails and historic structures, and reduce stormwater erosion.

Here are some action photos from the cleanup! Happy Friday!

Happy Lotus Day! Today marks our 12th Anniversary 🥂✨ Here’s a message from our President, Katherine Farrow:

Sometimes I still cannot believe how far Lotus has come since I signed the formation papers on May 1, 2009. I knew that I wanted to create an environmental consulting firm that not only provided high quality and responsive services but that also reflected my own values of honesty, integrity, and fairness. In writing this post, I took a look at my first business plan and 12 years ago my goal was to have 10 -15 employees. Today we have two offices, 20 (soon to be 21) staff members and thoughts of future geographic and service area expansion.

Along the way I have been able to surround myself with a team of dynamic professionals who are among the best I have ever worked with over my many years in the industry. This team has become like family and together we have forged strong bonds that make working together a pleasure. The success of Lotus is truly due to the hard work and dedication of our staff.

I am also grateful to our clients who have chosen Lotus to be their go-to environmental firm. Without your continued loyalty and support, this would not have been possible. Thank you for believing in us and allowing us to help you achieve success on your many projects. I am looking forward to many more years leading Lotus towards future success.

Please join us in celebrating Lotus today & thank you to our staff and clients! 🌿🌻

Teammate Tuesday Employee Spotlight: Introducing Connor Sullivan 🌿☀️🐢

Connor Sullivan joined our Lotus Team very early in his career as an Environmental Scientist. Connor’s technical specialties include aquatic and wetland ecology, geographic information systems (GIS) mapping, and threatened and endangered (T&E) species habitat surveys.

At Lotus, Connor’s primary duties include conducting wetland and stream delineation surveys, conducting Phase 1 & Phase 2 Bog Turtle Habitat Assessments, conducting T&E species coordination with government agencies, preparation of NEPA documentation, and compiling and submitting permit applications. He’s also one of our resident GIS experts, which we use to generate our graphics and calculate project impacts.

One of Connor’s favorite aspects of his job at Lotus is to spend time in nature and to be encouraged to continuously learn and expand his knowledge, particularly in the study of native plant species. Connor has noted that “some days he still wakes up amazed that he gets paid to investigate and document the diversity of plants and animals in their natural habitats.”

“I really appreciate that my job helps to make the interaction between man-made environments and nature a positive and mutually beneficial process,” Connor said. Connor has recently begun to implement what he has learned to his home garden, where he recently planted a native paw-paw tree in his yard.

When Connor is not working, he likes to spend his time fly-fishing, snowboarding, gardening, and taking his two dogs on hikes. He also is an amateur beer brewer- and his own personal taste-tester!

Please join us in celebrating Connor! Happy Teammate Tuesday! 🌱✨

Check out some photos of Connor in the field and a few of his personal favorites!

Happy Earth Day! 🌿🌻🌱 At Lotus, our staff is encouraged to do their part every day to reduce, recycle, reuse, and restore in our own back yards. In recognition of Earth Day this year, we thought we’d share how we at Lotus try to do our small part to Restore Our Earth!

Our President, Katherine, volunteers at a community/food pantry garden, where they grow vegetables for local food banks. Our Director of Cultural Resources, Marcia, and her family keep a small flock of chickens that not only provide delicious fresh eggs, but also fertilizer for their garden.

Our Project Manager Gretchen and her family recycle paper towel rolls, dryer lint, and newspaper year-round to make kindling fire starters. Our Marketing Coordinator, Rachel, cleans up the trash in the alley behind her apartment to lend a hand in her neighborhood.

Lotus Camp Hill employees are participating in the ASHE Harrisburg Adopt A Highway Spring Clean-Up. And in early May, members of the Lotus Wayne office will practice stewardship by taking part in the annual Wissahickon Valley Park Clean-Up. Check out a few photos of our staff in action!
