Play. To play an instrument. To play for the joy of it. To play.

How quickly i got lost and muddled in what being a professional musician means. This album brought me back.

mālama means to care for. By caring for oneself, you also preserve the music in its purity.

The songs on the album "Original Joy" are a collection of melodies that were created for the sake of my own personal joy. There was no plan.

Once arricing in Asheville. We felt drawn to them. They became songs. A story. A game.

Focusing on what makes you feel good in the present. And just going there. It seems to be a theme right now.

I feel this strongly with the process of gender expression. For most of ny life i saw clothing as a source of trauma and shame, having to navigate cultural rules that erased me. After peeling back those layers of trauma however, i saw a space to fill with whatever i wanted. Whatever felt like me, just me.

Clothes, gender expression, the whole gambit...it seems to be a creative opportunity that life gifts us. A chance to feel original joy that comes from us simply existing.

Im so here for this.

Learning how to play again for the joy of it. Focusing on the experience of how something feels rather than what looks like on the outside. This is what its all about.

Yesterday, we went out while everyone was inside. Opening thier amazon wrapped presents.

We didnt see a soul for hours. Not even the kids were out yet. Walked down the middle of the street.

Then, we ran into one person. A woman, holding her camera. Taking pictures of icicles.

I threw my arm up in a freindly wave. She waved back, and smiled.

I watched her find the next shot, something beautiful and stark that i had just walked past. I wasnt jealous, i wondered if i would ever see her photos.

Then, i turned in the store window and took this photo. I treid to take a picture of the icicles she found, but it turned out like s**t. I like this one better.

Went for a winter walk all morning. Wrote songs all afternoon.

Saw snow for the first time in a number of years.

Its nice to be back in a temperate, seasonal place. It was this Florida dogs first frost too.

We've been doing lots of recording and mixing music when we arent working, hiking, or sleeping.

Will be excited to share when the time comes.

Do you remember this one?

We recorded this with MusicGNV at Cypress & Grove Brewing Co. right as the pandemic hit and local businesses were shut down. Feels like years ago.

We hope that the connections between covid-19 and the way we treat the earth as separate from us... is not lost.

"Humans, we are standing, in between...two states of being."

When is the last time you supported a local artist? Business? A local organization fighting for change? Planted a seed? Took time to care for yourself?

One step at a time. Miss everyone and hope you are staying healthy and safe.

We got off work, it felt like it might rain. We drove up the windy road to the parkway anyways.

As i gazed out the window, we zoomed past steep hollers and gentle ridges...i felt an old feeling.

I tried to hold it back for a moment, embarrassed...and then it broke. I cried and cried.

Its so beautiful. This feels like home.

The truth is, the mountains have saved me. We met in the mountains, fell in love there. The trees have listened when other would not. The soil has caught many tears.

The wind has taught me to feel and listen. I felt the creator for the first time here.

I cried and cried. I missed you. Ancient, wise hills of rock.

I must serve you better, as i dont deserve to simply consume your beauty.

Morning explorative walk on the native Cherokee and Yuchi lands led us to the local climbing log...thank goodness for layers bc we were not ready for this 60 degree temp drop.

The golden colors are reminding us of when we first met, in the rolling mountains. Feeling our calves when we go to get the mail is exciting.

We decicd we were going to treat the next year in Asheville as a vacation. Yes, we are working but that is besides the point. We wake up to new people in bed every day and we are excited to meet them.

The house we are renting has big windows, sits up in the trees, and only has one spirit currently residing here.

Im trying to remind myself to be patient with this change, there is a lot to process and its exhausting to experience all new things...but its wonderful.

Everyone deserves to celebrate Samwhein or Halloween, the changing seasons, the final harvest moon, friends, family, and the spirits that live amongst us. May your ancestors be given many gifts tonight.

Maybe the last time I will ever play "We are the Light."

As we prepare for a new chapter of this thing called life and Baer and the Lady. We keep ourselves open to the realm of artistic possibilities.

New songs, new band members, new projects, old projects revived, who knows.

But, we will strive to reflect the light and not try to control it. As we are the light we see and we are always changing shape.

Thank you to those able to make it out last night for our goodbye set. Thanks to all those who have supported us in immeasurable ways.
