❄️ Another “only quits when it’s really cold” call… solved the Wright Way ❄️
This one was a 2012 Goodman gas packaged unit. The homeowner had a different local company out multiple times, and like clockwork — every time the temps dropped hard, the furnace quit.
Every. Single. Time.
After the usual cycle of parts being replaced and no real answers, she finally had enough and called us.
Here’s what we found 👇
🔴 Rollout switch pulled out of position
This one honestly stopped me in my tracks. A rollout switch is a critical safety device — it shuts the furnace down if flames or excessive heat roll out of the burner area. Pulling it out of the way defeats the safety and puts the homeowner at risk. That’s not a “fix.” That’s dangerous.
🔴 Extra flame sensor laying inside the unit
There was a second flame sensor just sitting inside the cabinet, still looking halfway decent. The installed sensor was likely swapped at some point, but again… no actual root-cause diagnosis.
🔴 The real problem: the control board
The furnace control board had visible burn damage on the back at the 12-pin plug where the R (power) wire connects.
If you pushed the plug in just right, the board would come to life — but the moment there was vibration or thermal expansion from cold weather, the connection would fail.
That’s why it only died during extreme cold.
✅ The correct fix
The long-term, reliable solution was a new control board. The replacement board supersedes the original, with improved design and stronger solder points, eliminating the weak connection and restoring proper reliability.
No guessing.
No parts cannon.
No bypassed safeties.
Just proper diagnosis and a correct repair — done the Wright Way.
If your system “only acts up sometimes,” or you’ve had the same issue “fixed” more than once… it might be time for a second opinion.
