If you are in Northern Colorado, save Dec. 1, 5:30-7:30 pm for an Art Walk at 3101 Kinzley Ct. in LaPorte. We have a volunteers appreciation art show and demos by artists (including me). You'll have a great time! It's a short drive from Ft. Collins with ample parking.

We all know about robots like R2D2 or androids like Commander Data, but what if robots were patterned after plants and not animals? That may become a real possibility. Read all about it in my latest article in Colorado Gardener magazine: https://www.coloradogardener.com/post/plantoids-and-growbots
Sadly, this is their last print issue. They are leaving their archives open and may create special features online in the future. My thanks to editor, Jane Shellenberger, who has become a good friend over the years.

"Flower or Fungus? That is the Question." is my latest article for Colorado Gardener magazine. Learn just how deceptive some flowering plants and fungi can be! Here's the link:

By R. Gary Raham: Pollinators of yellow-eyed grass (Xyris spp.) growing on the savannas of Guyana, South America, may question their senses as they swoop in for a landing looking for a sweet treat. Bees, for example, will usually find the attractive yellow grass flowers that are on their shopping li...

I’ve spent many years wandering the prairies of Northern Colorado and expounding about their mysteries and delights to artists, scientists—and anyone else who will listen! Over that time, I’ve sketched or painted various illustrations to accompany articles I’ve written or for interpretive signage. I’ve created a set of notecards that feature some of that artwork with a brief description in the hopes that others will enjoy viewing them and giving them to friends. My “Prairie Predator” is the adorable prairie dog assassin known as the Black-footed Ferret. The wild violet teams up with harvester ants to reproduce, as depicted on my card titled “Prairie Partners.” The “Spotted Towhee” sings heartily from the top of a Mountain Mahogany bush. And “Bison Roam” is a card featuring the iconic plains Bison bison. If interested, please email me at [email protected]. I think you’ll enjoy my Prairie Collection.

I had a chance to attend the 30th Anniversary of the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas program. This has been a fantastic effort of acquiring natural areas in and around Fort Collins to both preserve habitat and provide great recreation/educational opportunities. The following link is a 15 minute video put together by my friend, Herb Saperstone, that features some of the sign work I've created for the city over the years. Hope you enjoy it!

Commemorating 30 years Fort Collins Natural Areas is a milestone the whole community can be proud of. Natural Areas connect to what's most important to you. ...

On October 30, 2022 I had a great interview with J. Scott Coatsworth, Author about my creative approach to writing science fiction especially as it pertains to my most recent novel, A Twice-Dead Genius Comporting with Misunderstood Abominations. Check it out at

Welcome to my weekly Author Spotlight. I've asked a bunch of my author friends to answer a set of interview questions, and to share their latest work. Today: R. Gary Raham writes both science fact and science fiction, and is a firm believer that the latter often excites a new generation of scientist...

If you've ever wondered about those little warty growths on your trees and shrubs (galls), you will enjoy my latest article in Colorado Gardener magazine entitled "Inspired by Galling Mysteries." It highlights the joy of scientists when they suddenly find out that life is even more amazing than they thought. See

By R. Gary Raham: Colleagues love to share epochal moments. These are times when expectations are dashed and they remember why their professional obsession of choice ignited their passion in the first place. I follow the blog of Chris Helzer, a Nebraskan who identifies himself as the Prairie Ecologi...

If you are wandering around the natural areas near Fort Collins, you may notice that the rabbitbrush plants have been invaded by dark, blue-green larvae. They belong to a beetle in the genus Trirhabda that specializes in munching on rabbitbrush. The adults (not in evidence yet) look like the beetle I've sketched on the right. The larvae serve as great treats for black birds.
