A few days ago we were dispatched to a possible fire in a garbage truck. When our crew arrived, they found batteries in the truck that had started to smolder. We wanted to remind everyone to dispose of your batteries properly! Alkaline and (many but not all) lithium ion batteries can be recycled here in Larimer County. Doing so will prevent issues like this one in the future. Please check out these links for all the places you can take batteries to be recycled.

It’s that time of year again!

School is back in session! As kids return to the classroom, slow down and stay alert. Watch for children in crosswalks, stopped school buses, bicycles, and increased pedestrian traffic. Put the phone down, leave extra space, and be prepared for the unexpected.

Let’s make getting to school just as safe as being there!

CONSISTENT WITH LARIMER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE GUIDANCE, FIRE RESTRICTIONS ARE IN PLACE FOR THE WELLINGTON FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT. PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE, WWW.WFPD.ORG, FOR MORE INFORMATION ON OPEN BURNING RESTRICTIONS THAT ARE IN PLACE.

Extreme Heat & Outdoor Picnics: As temps continue to in the 90’s, drink water often, do not wait until you feel thirsty. Follow the 2-hour rule for perishable food and shrink that window to 1-hour if outdoor temps top 90 degrees.

Back-to School & Commuting: Watch for children walking or biking near schools and bus stops. Teach kids to stand at least 3 giant steps (6 feet) back from the curb while waiting for the bus. Always come to a complete stop for flashing red school bus lights.

Be Aware of Changing Weather: August is a peak month for severe weather, ranging from sudden summer thunderstorms, hail, flash floods and active wildfires. Staying safe during sudden August weather shifts require monitoring alerts, preparing your home for seasonal storms and knowing what to do when lightning or wildfire smoke hits.

We had some very special visitors at Lisa’s Kid Corner! The Wellington Fire Department came out to visit the daycare, and as always, they were absolutely AMAZING! 👩‍🚒👨‍🚒🔥

The kids were so excited to see the firefighters, learn about what they do, and get a closer look at the fire truck. These visits are such a wonderful way for the children to become comfortable around firefighters and learn that they are there to help keep our community safe. 🧯🚒

We are so thankful for the time, kindness, patience, and love you always show our little ones. You never disappoint and always make these visits so special! ❤️

July Activity Report!

CALLS OF NOTE:
7/4/26 2353 hrs., 7950 N. CR 9, Motor Vehicle Accident with Entrapment: Engine 91, Engine 92, PFA Tower 1, Engine 6, Battalion Chief 01, and UCHealth ambulances responded to a motor vehicle accident involving multiple reported patients. Upon arrival, Engine 91 found a single vehicle overturned onto its roof with one occupant trapped beneath the vehicle. Due to the complexity of the incident, additional PFA resources were requested immediately. Crews worked together to stabilize the vehicle, extricate the trapped patient, and provide treatment to all victims. A total of six patients were transported to area hospitals. Two patients sustained minor injuries, two suffered moderate injuries, and two sustained severe, life-threatening injuries. One of the critically injured patients was airlifted by LifeLine 1 to Medical Center of the Rockies (MCR).

7/12/2026 1606 hrs. 9974 NE Frontage Rd., Motor Vehicle Accident: Engines 91 and 92, along with UCHealth, responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a vehicle that had struck a building. Upon arrival, Engine 91 found a single vehicle that had left the roadway and crashed into an unoccupied silo-type structure. Crews provided patient care while simultaneously assessing the structural stability and safety of the damaged building. One patient was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. The property owner responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for securing the damaged structure.

7/15/2026 2158 hrs., I-15 at mm 286-288, Wildland Fire: Brush 913 and Brush 92 were dispatched to a wildland fire spreading off of the interstate. Units arrived to find approximately 2 acres burning over a 2 mile stretch of the highway. Quick attacks by first arriving crews and assistance from Larimer County Emergency Services kept the fires under control and were extinguished quickly. The cause of the fires was unknown.

This morning, a crew of 3 and a brush truck were deployed to the Boulder Ranger District to assist the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grasslands should any fires start. This is considered a “pre-position” assignment as there is no active fire to which they will be assigned.

During these unprecedented times of very low snowpack, high temperatures and extremely low humidity, our neighboring forests request additional resources to attempt to catch fires while they are still small. This crew will spend the next 14 days assigned to whatever the Ranger District needs. We are excited to be able to assist our neighbors because many of these surrounding agencies also help us when we need it.

While the crew is away, nothing changes here in Wellington! Our stations are still fully staffed and you will see no change in services.

As we prepare for our community's Fourth of July celebration, we understand that many residents have questions and concerns about the planned public fireworks display given the current fire conditions. We want to assure you that the safety of our community, firefighters, and surrounding property remains our highest priority.

To reduce risk, prior to the event, crews will thoroughly wet down both the launch site and designated fall-out zone. Throughout the display, Wellington Fire Protection District personnel, including 2 brush trucks and additional firefighters, will be strategically positioned to quickly respond to any potential issues.

Our command staff will continuously monitor weather conditions leading up to and during the event. The decision to proceed will be based on real-time conditions, including wind speed, humidity, and overall fire behavior potential. If sustained winds exceed our established safety threshold, or if conditions become otherwise unsafe, the fireworks display will be canceled, postponed or delayed.

Based on the current National Weather Service forecast, winds are expected to remain favorable around the scheduled 9:30p.m. start time. However, forecasts can change, and conditions will continue to be evaluated right up until launch.

We appreciate the community's understanding and patience as we work with our public safety partners to provide a safe 4th of July celebration. If conditions allow, we encourage everyone to enjoy the professionally managed fireworks display and help reduce wildfire risk by leaving fireworks to the professionals. Please remember that many consumer fireworks remain illegal in Colorado, including anything that explodes or leaves the ground, and can quickly ignite dry vegetation under current conditions.
