We will be replacing the battery backup batteries in the tornado siren this morning. Once installed we will do a test to make sure it is working properly. Thank you.

We apologize for the siren not going off. With power flickering on and off the signal did not trigger when it was requested. I will be doing maintenance checks tomorrow after these storms move out fully. We are able to set it off a different way and now that we are aware we have made appropriate actions to do so. Thank you and our apologies.

I want to take a moment for everyone to understand the truly amazing county we live in.

This morning with extreme cold temperatures the unthinkable page came across the speaker. A house on fire with flames visible on the siding but the owners were able to get out. Instantly when we arrived we were faced with multiple challenges but received amazing support. The trucks rolled up, lines pulled, hooked to hydrants and wham the first obstacle came. A few of the valves flash froze with the quick change in temperature from the station to the outside elements. We continued to fight now using our tanker to pump water while we worked the ice from the valves on the pumper truck. During this time we had requested Holland Fire Department to mutual aid to come help. We had the pumper going and then the next obstacle came - ice again only this time the truck was trying to shut down. Now we called Grundy Center Fire and Grundy Center ambulance to come help with manpower and a pumper and ambulance in case there were any problems. Holland Fire arrived on scene when we were forced to shut the truck down to avoid damage. As firefighters worked the inside of the house Grundy Fire arrived on scene and set up to again start work on the exterior of the home. Like a perfectly matched gear the cogs aligned and the fire was put out.

Yes there were some bumps in the road along the way but no one that was there made any comments. Instead we came together, stood strong and tackled the task at hand.

This happens many times in the county with other departments coming to help at request and through thick and thin the jobs are done. We have excellent fire service in Grundy County and I want to thank all of them for the time and commitment they put in.
