🌿 PSA for our grass-growing friends: it's that time of year! ☀️
Small engine season is in full swing, and our shop is busier than a one-legged man at a kick-starting contest (I went through many analogies to get to that one). If you're wondering why mower repairs take a few weeks, let us walk you through what actually happens when your machine comes through our door:
🔍 Step 1: Intake & Inspection
Every mower gets looked over top to bottom before we do anything, even if you just came in for maintenance. Age, condition, obvious damage, we want the full picture before we ever pick up a wrench.
🧪 Step 2: Diagnosis (the detective work and time suck!)
This is where most people underestimate the time. A mower that "won't start" could be a carburetor, a fuel issue, a bad spark plug, a failing ignition coil, a clogged air filter, stale gas, or something that ended up in the deck that definitely shouldn't be there. We've seen things. 😅 We don't guess, we test until we know and in some instances we have to fix one thing before we get the full picture.
📦 Step 3: Parts
Once we know what's wrong, Nick gets to make the call (sometimes it's his lovely assistant aka his wife) nobody loves making and nobody loves getting, the diagnosis-and-dollar-amount conversation. After that excitement settles, the parts hunt begins. We have accounts with a wide range of vendors and we go through all of them, because for older machines, finding the right component can turn into an archaeological dig through supplier catalogs and discontinued parts lists. We don't rush it, we don't cheap out, and we don't stop looking until we find the right fit. If we wouldn't put it on our own equipment, it's not going on yours.
🔧 Step 4: The Actual Repair
This is where Nick earns his reputation. Every repair gets done the right way, not the fast way, not the "close enough" way, not the "we'll see how long that holds" way. This stage is where details make or break the whole job. One cross-threaded bolt can ruin your day, our day, and frankly Nick's mood for the rest of the afternoon. So we take our time, do it right, and sleep well knowing your mower isn't going to strand you halfway through your backyard.
✅ Step 5: Test Before It Leaves
We run it. We make sure it starts, runs clean, and is ready to tackle your yard before we ever call you to pick it up.
Here's the win, we're down to 2–3 weeks. A month ago the wait was 4–6 weeks, so we're making progress and Nick hasn't slept much to get us there. Every single repair is done by Nick himself, start to finish. That's not a limitation, that's the whole point. You know exactly who touched your machine and exactly what was done to it. As for his wife, she is a treasure, a saint even, for putting up with the hours. But if she ever picks up a wrench, that's your cue to leave and take it some place else. We all saw what happened when he was out of town for a week.😄
