**The results are in!**

I passed the pilot exam to become one of the first in the nation to be nationally certified for spoken language interpreting in education. 🎉

Why does this matter?

First, this credential recognizes the growing demand for qualified interpreters and effective language access services in educational settings (i.e., IEP meetings, Section 504 meetings, Special Education evaluations, Speech and Language evaluations, disciplinary meetings, parent-teacher conferences, etc.).

Second, it establishes a standardized measure when demonstrating a skill set in spoken language interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous) in educational settings to professionalize the industry and set a benchmark.

I'm proud to have participated in this pilot project for the translation and interpreting industry. In my experience, schools often rely on a Spanish teacher, ELL teacher, or bilingual secretary to handle these challenging topics, people who have the best intentions but who lack the vocabulary and recall skills to completely and accurately convey the meaning of the message. In other cases, schools may hire an interpreter or contract with an agency, but occasionally that interpreter has minimal experience in educational settings and falls short of mastering the content or vocabulary in the session.

So this credential isn't just another accolade; it's a step in the right direction toward addressing these issues and ensuring that schools and interpreters will be better equipped to provide quality and effective language access services to students and families.

Check out this recently recovered jewel from the archives -- one of my many creative and enjoyable educational projects with Dan D. and Alverno College colleagues in the simulation lab. This video was created to demonstrate culturally appropriate care while interpreting in labor and delivery. As you watch the video, what are some examples of the culturally appropriate interactions taking place in this scenario?

Thank you to the Latino Medical Student Association at Medical College of Wisconsin for the invitation to speak about barriers to communication at your Cuentos del Corazón event earlier this month! It's always a pleasure to engage in opportunities to support medical Spanish on campus, and the activity of painting an anatomically correct heart was a unique twist on the Valentine's Day theme.
