The Cape May County Park & Zoo is mourning the loss of two beloved snow leopards, Maliha and Bataar, who were longtime favorites among visitors.
Zoo officials announced that Maliha, 13, was euthanized in April following an unexpected medical event. Bataar, who was nearly 18 years old and among the oldest snow leopards in the nation, was euthanized in June after undergoing treatment for age-related health conditions for more than a year.
The pair was often spotted together relaxing on their outdoor platform and became a familiar sight for zoo guests. Matched through the Snow Leopard Species Survival Program, Maliha joined Bataar at the zoo in 2021, and the two remained together for the rest of their lives.
Bataar was the first snow leopard to move into the zoo's snow leopard habitat when it opened in 2015. Prior to Maliha's arrival, he successfully fathered cubs with his first mate, Tysa.
The zoo thanked visitors for their support and the many memories shared with the beloved big cats.
