15,000 customers. 50 years. All of it built on trust.

This year marks our 50th in business, and we just passed our 15,000th customer across metro Detroit. None of it happens without the trust you place in us. Every visit starts with a family opening their door and letting us in to care for the place they call home, and we have never taken that lightly.

That trust has held for decades, with some families staying with us across three and even four generations. Thank you for allowing us to look after your homes for 50 years. We are honored to keep earning it, one door at a time.

From all of us at Sergio's, thank you!

That big black ant on your counter? Don't wave it off. 🐜

It's almost certainly a carpenter ant — the largest ant you'll see indoors in Michigan, and the one that actually threatens your house. Carpenter ants don't eat wood like termites; they tunnel through it to nest. A colony inside usually means there's a moisture or leak problem feeding them.

Swipe through for the 10-second back-and-trail check that tells a carpenter ant from a harmless field ant, the four signs a colony is nesting inside, and why right now — late spring into summer — is peak season across metro Detroit. →

The #1 mistake? Spraying the trail. It kills the foragers you see and can scatter the colony into new satellite nests. The fix is finding the nest — that's our lane.

Tiny ants marching across your counter? Here's the 5-second test that can identify them. 🐜

If you crush one and it smells like rotten coconut or blue cheese, you've got the odorous house ant (Tapinoma sessile) — one of the most common indoor ants in Michigan. No smell? You're probably looking at a pavement or carpenter ant instead, which is a different fix.

And they're not rare — iNaturalist sightings put them all over metro Detroit, from Ann Arbor to the Macomb line. This is the ant most likely to find your kitchen.

Here's the part most people get wrong: that trail on the counter is a sliver of the colony. These ants run hundreds of queens and dozens of connected nests. Hit them with store-bought spray and you don't kill the trail — you stress the colony into "budding," where queens split off and start new nests. You end up with more trails, not fewer.

What actually works is targeted bait the workers carry home to the queens. Slower to start, but it collapses the colony instead of scattering it through your walls.

Swipe through for the full ID and the one move to avoid. →

Seeing trails you can't get rid of? Send us a photo — we'll ID it free and build a plan that ends it.

Found a roach in the house? Read this before you panic. 🪳

This little amber guy is a tawny cockroach — an OUTDOOR insect that flew in toward a light. And as the map shows, they're reported all over metro Detroit, from West Bloomfield to Ann Arbor. Seeing one is normal. It doesn't infest, doesn't breed indoors, and wants nothing in your kitchen.

The roach that DOES mean trouble looks different: smaller, with two dark racing stripes right behind the head. That's a German cockroach — an indoor breeder, and one usually means many.

Not sure what you're looking at? Snap a photo and send it our way — we'll ID it for free.

Episode 12 of The Local Loop is live, and it also marks one full year of the podcast. Trevor Medema and Dion De Gennaro started this show talking about the deer cull, and one year later they are circling right back to it with the results.

Here is what this episode covers:

The deer cull: Farmington Hills aimed to remove 400 deer through the regional program. They got 70. About 2,300 pounds of venison was donated to local food banks, which equals roughly 9,200 meals. The city is calling it a multi-year plan, and phase two may involve an archery component, something the guys have questions about.

The albino deer: The city confirmed the loss of Farmington Hills' well-known albino deer, struck by a vehicle on 12 Mile and Halsted. She had been a community favorite for years. Dion shares that she spent a lot of time at his mom's property and had fawns over the years, and breaks down why there is still a chance her genetic line could continue.

The murder at Woodland Hills: On May 3rd, Farmington Hills resident Richard Allen Harris was found on a trail at Woodland Hills Nature Preserve. It has been confirmed as a suspected homicide and remains unsolved. Trevor and Dion talk through the timeline of the city's communication and some honest concerns about how this was handled publicly.

Flock Safety cameras: Since 2023, Farmington Hills has had about 40 license plate reader cameras positioned at every major road entering the city. Trevor and Dion break down what Flock Safety is, how it works, who has access, and what it means for residents.

This is a long one, but a really good one. Have a listen and let us know what you think in the comments.

A proud day at Sergio's. Our General Manager, Dion Degennaro, just earned his NPMA PRO Certification.

The NPMA PRO is the National Pest Management Association's professional credential, recognizing technical expertise, integrated pest management, and the standards we bring to every property we service. It's not handed out lightly. Dion has been with Sergio's for nearly two decades, and this kind of ongoing professional development is exactly why we trust him to lead our operation day to day.

For us, what this credential really represents comes down to three commitments:

→ Our craft. Sharpening the technical side of what we do, year over year.
→ Our community. Showing up for our neighbors across Oakland County and treating every property like it's our own.
→ Our environment. Using the most targeted, lowest-impact methods available, because the homes and yards we treat are also habitats.

Congratulations, Dion. And to every customer who has trusted Sergio's with your home or business, thank you. We don't take it for granted.

I was walking a path between appointments today and came across this area with a lot of small holes in the ground and bees flying low. This is a good example of ground bees nesting.

I get questions about these all the time, and most people assume they need to be treated right away. In reality, that’s usually not the case.

Ground bees are generally non-aggressive and play an important role as pollinators. In most situations, we actually recommend leaving them alone rather than treating them.

If they’re in an area where they’re becoming a nuisance, there are a few things you can do that don’t involve killing them:
- Reduce bare soil by seeding or adding mulch
- Water the area more regularly, since they prefer dry ground
- Work on thickening up the lawn to make it less appealing for nesting

In a lot of cases, they’ll move on naturally as the season changes.

If you’re not sure what you’re seeing or want a second opinion, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to take a look and point you in the right direction.
