When you’re setting goals, making a decision, or solving a problem as part of a group, the more everyone shares their full thinking the better the outcome. However, everyone is masking to some degree, hiding certain views, opinions and concerns. As Patrick Lencioni pointed out, when the leader drops their mask first, and shares something unexpected or surprising, the other team members will usually follow.

Are you aware of how you and your colleagues unnecessarily create stress and that there’s a way to reverse it?

SchellingPoint’s collaboration research found that when business people don’t agree with each other’s words or actions, 95% of the time they believe the other person has selfish motivations. Thoughts such as, “He is trying to build an empire.” “She’s only doing that to get a promotion.” “He’s shooting down my idea because he doesn’t like me.”

When we tested these negative judgments, less than 5% were accurate. The other 95% had well-meaning reasons behind the words and actions.

Realize that we all make these negative judgments of other people’s intentions from time to time. Next time you catch yourself thinking this way, presume the other person has a positive motivation, even if you are unaware of what it might be.

The more often leaders do this, the more their teams copy their behavior, reducing a common source of organizational stress, dysfunction, and conflict.
