Could doing your laundry at 6pm soon cost you more?
TIME OF USE means your electricity prices vary by time of day. It encourages shifting usage away from peak use hours. Your potential savings depend on your utility’s rates and your entire household’s usage pattern.
My take: I expect TOU to eventually become the default, with an opt-out. Demand is growing faster than dependable supply in our grid region, and utilities are going to use all the tools they have to manage high-demand peaks while new capacity (aka power plants and infrastructure) catches up. I see current opt-in programs as groundwork for broader adoption in the next couple of years.
That is my prediction! Not an announced rollout by the utilities. TOU is one tool among several and does not guarantee reliability on its own. Traditional TOU options also predate today’s capacity pressures, and you can voluntarily enroll in this today.
Before changing rates, compare your usage by time of day, current tariff prices, and any bill-protection terms.
